You’re right....he’s not an atheist. He is an ‘anti-theist’, which is an entirely different animal. The atheist says, “There is no God” and leaves it at that. The anti-theist says, “There is no God, and I hate Him!”.
The atheist will, in most cases, just roll their eyes and usually leave the believer alone. The anti-theist will denigrate, defame, and excoriate the believer for their beliefs, and will do everything in their power to tear down, if not completely eradicate, the Christian faith.
In recent times, we’re seeing a switching from atheism to anti-theism. People’s hatred of God, of Jesus, and of His followers is becoming more apparent.
Those of us who read the Book knew it was gonna happen.
Otherwise, God would not make them go into convulsions at the mere thought of Him. Maybe they really would get permanent burns on their foreheads from crucifixes. Nice thought there-brain candy.
