“The church that Peter built, the Catholic Church, was founded by Christ, through Peter. “

You mean the Christian CHurch, don’t you :-) But seriously, I’m LCMS, and I’m in agreement that Peter was Christ’s right hand man, basically. I suspect that what Christ meant was for Peter to take over as overseer (for lack of a better term), watching over the fledgling Church, once Christ returned to heaven.

The amount of linguistic gymnastics that you have to go through to pretend there is any way that after giving Simon bar Jonna, his new name Peter, that the next pronoun is a self reference by Christ, is the height of desperation.

Er, well, actually....

Taute "this" is often used in Koine Greek to refer to a subject appearing in a sentence or paragraph more distantly preceding than the immediate word in front of it, and can also be used in reference to a subject that has been previously described in detail, which means that the "rock" being referred is actually likely to be the great confession of v.16, which Christ had then expounded upon in v. 18. This seems especially likely given the gender disparity between petros and petra, which appears to be a play on words (also very common in scripture).

Please tell us where your twisted interpretation came from?

And while you’re at it, let’s hear what you have to say about the rest of Christ’s blessing that passage.

“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

So, in this multi-part blessing of Peter, you would have us believe that Christ picked out one phrase and referred to Himself?

Nonsense!

This is the truth of Christ. Christ gave Peter the Keys of the Kingdom, telling him to “Feed my sheep,” “Tend my sheep,” and “Feed my Lambs.”

God's Word also says...

Galatians 2:7-9 (ASV)

7 but contrariwise, when they saw that I had been intrusted with the gospel of the uncircumcision, even as Peter with the gospel of the circumcision 8 (for he that wrought for Peter unto the apostleship of the circumcision wrought for me also unto the Gentiles); 9 and when they perceived the grace that was given unto me, James and Cephas and John, they who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship, that we should go unto the Gentiles, and they unto the circumcision;

Are you a Jew, or a Gentile?

What are the keys to? The Kingdom of Heaven - Do you know what that is? Because its not any church, religion, or denomination.

There is no reason for Christ to Give Peter his new name and then use the SAME term to refer to himself, in a sentence structure that makes NO SENSE in ANY language.

Jesus had given Simon the name Cephas (Peter) when they first met.

John 1:40-42 (ASV)

40 One of the two that heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. 41 He findeth first his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messiah (which is, being interpreted, Christ). 42 He brought him unto Jesus. Jesus looked upon him, and said, Thou art Simon the son of John: thou shalt be called Cephas (which is by interpretation, Peter).

Perhaps you could read the entire passage before isolating a phrase and pretend to turn the entire meaning on it’s head:

Matthew 16:17-19:

And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

By that quote the ’rock’ is .my father who is in heaven’ and the keys to the kingdom is Jesus and hid teachings.

Anything else would be quite twisted

Matt. 14:23-27: St. Peter is uniquely empowered by Jesus to walk on water, and when his faith begins to falter, our Lord does not allow him to go under. This is a prelude to Jesus promising to give his authority that can never fail to Peter in Matt. 16. The gift of the papacy is here assured not to depend upon the person of St. Peter or of his successors, but on the promise and power of Christ.

This is embarrassingly bad. Catholic.com needs to open God's Word and actually read it before commenting.

God is no respecter of persons - Peter himself confesses: Then Peter replied, "I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism. (Acts 10:34 - see also Deut 10:17, Romans 2:11, Ephesians 6:9 among others) Let's look at Jesus and Peter walking on the water.

Matthew 14:27-29 (ASV)

27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. 28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto the upon the waters. 29 And he said, Come. And Peter went down from the boat, and walked upon the waters to come to Jesus.

What was Jesus supposed to say? It WAS him, so he HAD to say "come." Its no more complicated than that. Admire Peter for stepping out in faith - nobody else did. But this in no way elevates his position - God does not play favorites.

Matt. 17:24-27: After receiving the promise of authority in Matt. 16, St. Peter is once again given supernatural power to provide for both himself and Jesus when the first-century equivalent of the I.R.S. comes calling! Peter acts as Christ’s “vicar” or in the place of Jesus in miraculous fashion guaranteed by Jesus not to fail.

Peter was not made El Jefe in Matthew 16. There is only one HEAD of the Church, which at the time of Matthew 16 & 17 DID NOT EVEN EXIST. It was a Mystery, Hidden in God, and not announced until Paul received the Revelation from God and was told to teach it. In Matthew 17, impetuous Peter put his foot in his mouth yet again. He was asked if Jesus paid taxes and answered without consulting Jesus. Jesus was exempt - that was the correct answer. Peter said he did. NOW, put your big boy theologian pants on and consider this - Jesus had a full time ministry, at least 12 apostles, sometimes as many as 70 disciples, along with women who followed him. He had a treasurer, Judas, and a common purse, with enough that Judas was stealing from it. Why did Peter have to go fishing? Cue the Jeopardy theme song.

Believers are children of God, joint heirs of Jesus, made alive in Christ and seated in Heavenly places. They are placed in the Body of Christ by God. The Head, and ONLY HEAD of the Body is Jesus. God did not create any religious monarchy. The Body of Christ is made up of brethren, where there is neither Jew or Gentile, male of female, pope or cardinal, but one BODY. This is not rocket science if you read His Word with a willing spirit and ears to hear.

Paul did many extraordinary miracles as well (Acts 19:11) - raised from the dead, lived through a hurricane, cast out devils, shake off a snake bite, healed the sick, temporary blindness of a man thwarting him preaching the Word. He operated in all the gifts of the Spirit - including Word of knowledge, praying in tongues and interpretation, Word of Wisdom, discerning spirits, and prophecy. He was translated to Heaven and heard "unspeakable words", and was given the Revelation of the Body of Christ. I say all this not to elevate Paul, or denigrate Peter. All Believers are called for a purpose and anointed by God to fulfill His plan.

Paul had this to say about him and Peter. Note, Believers are all brethren.

1 Corinthians 1:10-13 (ASV)

10 Now I beseech you, brethren, through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfected together in the same mind and in the same judgment. 11 For it hath been signified unto me concerning you, my brethren, by them that are of the household of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. 12 Now this I mean, that each one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos: and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. 13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized into the name of Paul?

1 Corinthians 3:1-11 (ASV)

1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, as unto babes in Christ. 2 I fed you with milk, not with meat; for ye were not yet able to bear it: nay, not even now are ye able; 3 for ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you jealousy and strife, are ye not carnal, and do ye not walk after the manner of men? 4 For when one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not men? 5 What then is Apollos? and what is Paul? Ministers through whom ye believed; and each as the Lord gave to him. 6 I planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither is he that planteth anything, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. 8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: but each shall receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God's fellow-workers: ye are God's husbandry, God's building. 10 According to the grace of God which was given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder I laid a foundation; and another buildeth thereon. But let each man take heed how he buildeth thereon. 11 For other foundation can no man lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 3:18-23 (ASV)

18 Let no man deceive himself. If any man thinketh that he is wise among you in this world, let him become a fool, that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He that taketh the wise in their craftiness: 20 and again, The Lord knoweth the reasonings of the wise that they are vain. 21 Wherefore let no one glory in men. For all things are yours; 22 whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; 23 and ye are Christ's; and Christ is God's.

There is only ONE HEAD in the Body, and its not Peter, Paul, or anyone else, no matter how snappy they dress, or what titles they give themselves. There is no religious monarchy in the Body of Christ.

Already done. Read the threads.

Christ changed Simon’s name. Peter and rock sound similar in Greek. Then he said “on this rock I will build my church”. He didn’t say “on YOU I will build.....” As for “the rest” several verses later Christ calls Peter ‘Satan’ and tells him to ‘get behind me....’

Hmm. So now the foundation of Christ’s church is Satan?

Where did I get this? Scripture. It’s called exegesis. Rome prefers eisegesis.

The only tortured interpretation here is Rome’s Cult, to which you seem to subscribe. Christ is the head of his Church, which is composed of all those called, justified, and given faith to believe in him.

Try reading Romans and Ephesians sometime for starters. Truth will do you good. It might even set you free.

What you say is true, but incomplete. And that is the position in which all non-Catholics find themselves - searching for completeness. The veracity of my claim is found in the myriad congregations of evangelicals and protestants. None can stake a claim on the Truth. Most hold the belief in ‘sola scriptura’, even tho that belief is nowhere to be found in the Bible; the Bible that was compiled by the Catholic Church in first couple of centuries following Jesus’ resurrection and ascension. But surely you are already aware of that.
