This is the teaching of Catholic apologetics to Catholics. It is not an attempt at cruelty, but at education in the world where Catholicism is often contradicted by other Christians.
One might rather ask if all Christians should be putting aside their differences, preaching of, and defending Jesus Christ to atheists, Wiccans, even satanists and their ilk. This applies to all followers of Christ.
