ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE Pope Francis said Thursday there are limits to freedom of expression, especially when it insults or ridicules someone's faith.[...]
"If my good friend Dr. Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch," Francis said, throwing a pretend punch his way. "It's normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others."[...]
"There are so many people who speak badly about religions or other religions, who make fun of them, who make a game out of the religions of others," he said. "They are provocateurs. And what happens to them is what would happen to Dr. Gasparri if he says a curse word against my mother. There is a limit."

Let me guess... he was “misunderstood,” and the pro-Francis spinners will be in shortly to set us all straight.
Falls right in line with how Catholics have behaved on this board. They claim that the commandment to turn another cheek only applies when someone is attacking them. When someone is attacking Christ, His Saints, or His Church, they have told us that they are going to strike back because "they love God and one another".
Sorry, the Catholic church has been there and done that. Time for Islam to get over itself.
It's painfully obvious that this Pope has no sense of context, nuance or precision in addressing any question that gets put to him. Why he is allowed to run off at the mouth impromptu is just baffling. As well as discouraging.
The Pope doesn’t seem to understand the concept of free speech and freedom of expression.
Pope Dhimmi I also doubles as Pope Envirowhacko I as well.

I guess he missed the study on the “7 times 70” verses......
To quote a Catholic Pop article posted on freepers about Cardinal Burke, “Trying to understand Church issues through mainstream secular media is like trying to understand global economics through a 13 year old girl’s Instagram account.” Fox right now is being very aggressive about terrorism and the Charlie Hebdo thing. So I’ll reserve judgment until I see his words in context.
islamists cannot be insulted once they’re dead, and they should be made that way en masse.
Actually neither of those concepts are to be found in the Gospels or Epistles. Both the Pope and the Church would be better served by sticking to what IS said about speech from those sources - and there's plenty.
Not that it matters, because the Pope must declare war on Muslims and I guess they expect Catholics to clean this mess up as well. Oh well......
He’s right in line with Bill Donohue of the Catholic League.
So, Pope Ignoramus, I can expect your Cardinals to burst in my home shooting, now that I shall relentlessly mock you?
Thanks. Proves my point IMHO.
There was a time when a Pope would have called for a Christian Army to go exterminate the Saracens.
Christians were slandered by Charlie Hebdo in almost every issue. In fact the most current one with Mohammed on the cover also contains an obscene cartoon involving the Pope and communion. They were equal opportunity offenders.
I was about to post this myself when I found it in a search.
I just found myself laughing when I read that comment by the Holy Father about “punching” someone who insults his mother. The imagry of him, all in white, swinging a right hook at someone made me laugh!
Sigh. I dunno anymore. Someone on this thread said it best for me I think: I think I’ll just “sit this Pope out”.
