The entire Gospel of John uses a system of symbols. Each action of Jesus--feeding the multitude, turning water into wine, being sacrificed in the manner of the Passover Lamb, giving Mary to John as his mother--is used by John as a sign of a greater or spiritual reality.
The Gospel DOES tell us that Mary is our spiritual mother--precisely in the passage we are discussing. The expectation that every truth in Scripture is to be found on the surface, expressed explicitly, rationalistically, and concretely, is a symptom of the loss of an understanding of the "spiritual sense" of Scripture.
The New Testament was not written in order to set out in explicit detail, using a concrete, rationalistic mode of expression, each and every belief of the Church.
BTW: If Mary had a number of children other than Jesus, then Jesus was VIOLATING THE LAW by giving Mary to John as his mother.
Do you play chess?
You might want to rethink what you just wrote about the ENTIRE GOSPEL OF JOHN USING A SYSTEM OF SYMBOLS.....
BTW: If Mary had a number of children other than Jesus, then Jesus was VIOLATING THE LAW by giving Mary to John as his mother.
And the people say, "say what??"
