The Catholic church came to power in Rome with Peter, her first Pope. You say it went downhill from there...that would mean that Jesus Christ went beck on His promise to be "With you until the end of time" God has indeed reserved for Himself true believers, they are known all over the world as Catholics. Jesus said that where two or three are gathered together, He would be in their midst.
So, no, He never went back on His promise to be with His body until the end of time.
Catholic’s problem is that they think their church is what Jesus was referring to, and they’re wrong about that.
The true church is an organism, not an organization or an institution.
