I'm about halfway through this 35 minute video.

I've never heard of Jacob Prasch before, but so far, I agree with what he's saying.

OK, but at about 18:40 he starts to broadbrush Calvinism.

Overall, though, MacArthur would do well to listen to Prasch's talk here.

I used to listen to John MacArthur, but his attacks on other legitimate Christian viewpoints grew tiresome. There are plenty of good Bible teachers who disagree on fine points of doctrine. They respect each other's points of view, but MacArthur just attacks them.

Frankly, I think MacArthur is envious of the amazing success of Calvary Chapels across the nation.

Disclaimers:

(1) A few months ago, I listened to all of the Strange Fire Conference.

(2) I don’t go to a Calvary Church, but when I travel, I often go to a Calvary church wherever I happen to be.

(3) I agreed with pretty much all that MacArthur said at the SFC, but NOT his criticisms of Chuck Smith and Calvary Chapel.

All of MacArthur’s criticisms focused on his dislike for guitar music, blue jeans and hippies. MacArthur criticized appearances, not substance.

Charismatic Calvinism will one day be unleashed upon us. Shudder.

I am not a Charismatic Calvinist.

By the way, John Piper and Wayne Grudem are good examples of CCs.

(Although MacArthur’s criticsms of Piper and Grudem WERE accurate.)

I’m posting these videos from the point of view of agreeing with some of MacArthur, but not all.

I like MacArthur’s explanations about specific passages in the Bible. I don’t like it when he comments on other people or churches.

Although I’m an ‘Arminian’, I also like Calvin’s commentaries on the Bible. When discussing a specific passage, Calvin is usually pretty good. His systematic theology, IMHO, sucks. MacArthur may have the same problem.

I didn’t mean to imply anything concerning you personally. I’ve been reading a little about MacArthur’s Strange Fire book and the strong reactions to it from the Charismatics. The old attraction - repulsion theme popped in my head.

BTW - I’m a non-charismatic product of the Jesus People movement. I converted at 13 in 1971. I was never a hippy, but the Jesus People movement was not all evil or fringe.

Very similar to my story. I was not raised in a Christian home. At about the same time and me being about the same age as you mention I was exposed to the Gospel through the album "Jesus Christ Superstar" when it was first released. I loved that album and read all the lyrics on the included lyric sheet enclosed with the album as I listened. This prompted me to start reading the bible and I got saved reading scripture.

There’s a lot of hot rancor about this.

The critiques seem to be heavy on the theory and less heavy on the empiricism. Does the usage of something that has a controversial status in Christendom lead to the enhancement or to the deterioration of things that everybody else agrees are characteristic of good Christendom?
