We had a new seminarian-ALMOST priest, who was, at least in his early 40's who did the sermon. It was his first homily and he (and the presiding priest) both asked for our candid opinions and even provided forms.
It was a new experience for me, rating a to-be-priest. The scales were 1-5 (one the best) and it was a two-page survey. MOST interesting.
NEW stuff at Mass. Amazing.
I WASN'T surprised at his age because I understand that a newish trend is occurring: widowers who were always consistent attendees of Mass becoming priests.
It's not a bad idea, actually, because they bring a maturity and set of life experiences that make them better priests.
My mother started law school when she was 55 years old, finished, took/passed the bar, hung out her law shingle at 60 years of age and FINALLY retired at 80.
SHE took MUCH maturity and experience to her law practice and said that, OFTEN, what couples only needed was some EXTREMELY practical advice on marriage.
You had a wise mother.
Yes, she was.
Father, mother and sister were all VERY talented in art, my mother at the later age.
I have none of those artistic talents and I only inherited a MODICUM of my father's athletic abilities as well. I inherited enough brain power to realize how talented, wise, smart and so on, THEY were AND to know well my own shortcomings. Lol. Catch 22.
However, I have my faith and health and that's really all I need now. I consider myself blessed in these.
