In every other instance in the Bible in which the word “yom” (day) was used with either a number, the word morning or the word evening it was an obviously literal 24 hour day. Did Joshua and the Israelites march around Jericho for 7 million years? Was Jonah in the belly of a fish for 3 million days? Obviously not.

The Genesis account uses all three (number, morning, and evening) every single time. It is as though God is hitting us over the head with the fact that it was a literal six day creation. The only reason to state that the word day means something else in these two chapters is to make it fit the atheistic theory of evolution over long periods of time.

God didn’t need a magic wand, He just had to speak and creation existed.

I’m a Catholic but not a biblical scholar. But as I recall the bible breaks it down into “old” time and “new” time...

Genesis is plainly written for a reason. Some denominations just need wiggle room because they do not wish to look foolish to the world. They forget that at Judgement Day the world will look foolish. There were six literal days for Creation and God did not have to rest a million years afterwards either.

The issue here is that the bible is really a library of different literary genres... Genesis is a narrative not literal history (impossible to document all of creation), it is vastly different in genre from Leviticus, Exodus, the Gospels, The Epistles etc.

Ignorance of genre is ignorance of the nature of scripture.
