Less than a year ago, Mark Driscoll, an evangelical pastor, was flying high.
His hometown Seattle Seahawks were in the Super Bowl, and the brash pastor scored a big, faith-fueled interview with five of the team's top players, including quarterback Russell Wilson.
But in a remarkably fast fall from grace, Driscoll resigned Tuesday as pastor of Mars Hill Church, a congregation he founded 18 years ago and turned into a force in the mostly secular Pacific Northwest.
In a statement, Mars Hills' board of overseers said Driscoll hadn't committed any acts of "immorality, illegality or heresy" -- sins that have felled many a powerful pastor.
Instead, the board said, Driscoll is guilty of "arrogance, responding to conflict with a quick temper and harsh speech, and leading the staff and elders in a domineering manner."
Driscoll was not asked to leave, the board added, saying they were "surprised" to receive his resignation letter.

While that's quite true, that's not the standard to which the Lord holds His leaders, as best exemplified by Jesus Himself. So, regardless whether Driscoll packed butts into pews, his leadership was not "effective," as he is finally admitting. That's what elder boards are for, to hold senior leaders accountable and confront them as needed.
Excellent living parable :o)
Last year I was finding my way, and the biggest hurdle was attendance. I taught some classes four times! This year, I’ve set up two four-week sessions, instead of once a month, and I’m trying to get beyond lectures to something a little more involving.
When we do the Passover in the spring, I’ll have everyone on the floor on a blanket, to emphasize the vulnerability involved in sharing a meal and swearing a covenant. I gave a quick demo with one child last year (and had someone’s Dad saying, “Oh, that’s what it means!), but this year I can include everyone.
There's part of the problem...
So you say. He did not, however, build this huge institution by any other means than his own character. The disposition against him is, I am certain, more an overthrow than an attempt to create a Jesus-like atmosphere.
There churches are not based on Christian principle. They are hard nosed demagogic oligarchies. Nor does the lead despot resign out of some vague sense of impropriety. This is a power play by the elders. Mark my words.
Silly me. And here all along I thought it was Jesus who was building His church.
We went to a very, very large Calvary Chapel, and the pastor always had at least 2 “bodyguards” with him everywhere.
And Peter denied Jesus and later sided with the Judaizers.
If it wer Christ’s church that would certainly be the case. Not all who call His name are called by Him.
He actually said women’s bodies are houses for their husband’s penis. The dude is a pig.
If you need to take a class on how to communicate your sexual needs to your wife and vice versa, maybe you have a whole set of different issues...
There were members flocking to go to that. I think it's creepy the church even offered it let alone promote books from Driscoll.
