Why do Catholics believe they must be made to suffer in a celestial torture chamber before they are "good enough" to enter God's presence by their own merit?

Celestial torture chamber. Thanks for making my point. Cul-de-sac. God's mercy is greater than protestants give Him credit for. God in a box.

What is “Purgatory” if not a “Celestial torture chamber?”

What a skewed argument! If God's mercy is great, why must we be “purged” before entering His presence?

Having to be “purged” so one may enter His presence is “putting (the Catholic false) god in a box.”

Jesus is sufficient. Only by His sacrifice may we enter into His presence. Nobody approaches Him on their own merit, even if they are “purged” or “tortured” for eons in Purgatory (which does not exist).

>>God in a box.<<

That would be the box Catholics put Him in. They claim He cannot save outside that Catholic box.

God's mercy is greater than protestants give Him credit for.

This is an untruth.

Why are you repeating it?

On the contrary, God's mercy is greater than Catholics give Him credit for and are apparently capable of understanding.

It's not non-Catholics who claim that people have to suffer in pain and torment for uncounted years in order to have their sins 'cleansed'. We believe that Jesus' blood washes us from ALL sin, just as we are told in Scripture and that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, because God in His mercy FORGIVES us our sin instead of making us pay for them ourselves.

"Celestial torture chamber"

That's great! Thanks for putting it in perspective rides a red horse, cause everything I've been told doesn't indicate that purgatory is all rainbows and unicorns.
