Sheen Cause Suspended, Call For Prayer
The Catholic Post ^ | 3 September 2014 | Editor

EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is a news release from the Diocese of Peoria. It was distributed to the media on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014.

-----

It is with immense sadness that the Most Reverend Daniel R. Jenky, CSC, Bishop of Peoria and President of the Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Foundation, announced today that the Cause for Sheen’s beatification and canonization has for the foreseeable future been suspended. The process to verify a possible miracle attributed to Sheen had been going extremely well, and only awaited a vote of the Cardinals and the approval of the Holy Father. There was every indication that a possible date for beatification in Peoria would have been scheduled for as early as the coming year.

Bishop Sheen's cause has been suspended indefinitely. The Archdiocese of New York has refused to allow his body to be moved to Peoria in order for an official inspection to be made.

The bishop of Peoria has asked for continued prayers.

Regards,

So Dolan didn’t like Fulton Sheen. The reason? Most liberal democrat Catholics couldn’t stand him. He was too conservative for them. This is shameful. I would love to see Dolan fired today. Him and his type are what’s wrong with the Catholic Church in America. He’s too busy backslapping and giving pro-abortion politicians Holy Communion to have to worry about honoring the greatest American bishop of the 20th Century. Dolan is not fit to be mentioned in the same sentence with Archbishop Sheen.

I agree with you. I wonder what Rome thinks of all this news coming out today.

I have done a lot of studies of the cause process (part of my academic work) and this is highly unusual. Did they give a valid reason why?

Not to my knowledge, reaganaut. The Diocese of Peoria has simply stated that the Archdiocese of NY has refused to allow Bishop Sheen’s body to be moved for official Vatican inspection.

I don’t know why, but will update the thread if I find out the reason.

Regards,

I’m not a Catholic, and therefore obviously not too big on the whole “beatification and canonization” thing.

However, Sheen was a brilliant man. A dear Catholic friend of mine recently republished one of Sheen’s stellar books, which had gone out of print. It’s excellent. Three quarters of a century old, and still as fresh and relevant as if it was written yesterday.

“Power follows property, and they who own things to a great extent own persons. That is why in Russia, since all the productive property is in the hands of a few selfish opportunists, the citizens may go to the polls, but they may never exercise their freedom. So too under a highly capitalistic system, the laborers may vote for the president of their country, but they have nothing to say about the industry where they work. Once you concentrate property in the hands of the few, you create slaves; when you decentralize it, you restore liberty.”

~ Fulton J. Sheen, Freedom under God, Economic Guarantee of Liberty, 1940 (page 50).

“Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.’” (Mt 16:24)

Such is the plan, and on our choice depends eternal issues. Our attitude toward the inescapable cross immortalizes us, either for gain or loss. And though the plan seems hard, it is not blind, for Our Lord has not merely told us to follow Him – He has led the way. We can follow His footsteps out of the dark forest of our sufferings, but we can never say: He does not know what it means to suffer. He suffered first to teach us how to bear it. He did not say: “Go to the Cross”, but He did say: “Come, follow me.” Because He was God He knew that men would not go just because they were told, but that they would follow if an example were given.

~ Venerable Fulton J. Sheen, Justice and Charity II, 1938 (p 47).

“There is a famine abroad on the earth, a famine not of bread, for we have had too much of that and our luxury has made us forget God; a famine not of gold, for the glitter of so much of that has blinded us to the meaning of the twinkle of the stars; but a famine of a more serious kind, and one which threatens nearly every country in the world – the famine of really great men. In other words, the world today is suffering from a terrible nemesis of mediocrity. We are dying of ordinariness; we are perishing from our pettiness. The world’s greatest need is great men, someone who will understand that there is no greater conquest than victory over oneself; someone who will realize that the real worth is achieved, not so much by activity, as by silence; someone who will seek the Kingdom of God and His justice, and put into actual practice the law that it is only by dying to the life of the body that we ever live to the life of the spirit; someone who will brave the taunts of a Good Friday to win the joy of Easter Sunday; who will, like a lightning-flash, burn away the bonds of feeble interests which tie down our energies to the world; who, with a fearless voice, like John the Baptist, will arouse our enfeebled nature out of the sleek dream of unheroic repose; who will gain victories, not by stepping down from the Cross and compromising with the world, but who will suffer in order to conquer the world. In a word, what we need are saints, for saints are the truly great men.

“I assume without further ado that the grace of God is the one thing necessary, and that God will give that grace to those who do His will.”

~ Venerable Fulton J. SHEEN, The World’s Greatest Need (1938).

Proof of the miracle that Sheen requires is that he got through to me...sometimes.

Even more disturbing about the cropped photo you posted, is that Mitt is sitting on the other side of Dolan, opposite Obama.

Does Mitt have something to do with Archbishop Fulton Sheen, like these two guys do?
