Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Anyone who has ever had to deal with fleas can certainly agree with King David that they are among the nastiest vermin on the planet. Fleas are not only hard to eradicate, but are known carriers of diseases such as Plague and Typhus. One of the greatest life-savers in Europe in the aftermath of WW2 was DDT, because it helped combat fleas.

David, who said the words quoted in today's Scripture Passages, compares himself to a flea. It is the height of sarcasm, because his entire history with King Saul had been one of devoted service. As a shepherd boy, David had defeated Goliath. As a musician, he comforted Saul and provided Music Therapy for the king's insomnia. And to the King's son Jonathan, David was a faithful friend. David was also a son-in-law to Saul, but his marriage was a troubled one.

By comparing himself to a flea when referring to his relationship with Saul, David was describing the utter contempt, born of jealousy, in which Saul held him.
