THE UPPER ROOM
This was the room in which Jesus and his Apostles shared the Last Supper the night before he was crucified. According to Mark it was a large chamber furnished with couches and suitable for a dining room (Mark 14:14-15). It may have been a room erected on the roof, because most homes were one-story structures. Possibly it became a meeting place, because after the Ascension of Jesus, Luke reports that the Apostles and Mary returned to Jerusalem and "went to the upper room where they were staying" (Acts 1:12-14). According to tradition, the house was located near the present Zion Gate and the Armenian quarter.

12 And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the passover lamb, his disciples said to him, "Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the passover?" 13 And he sent two of his disciples, and said to them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him, 14 and wherever he enters, say to the householder, `The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I am to eat the passover with my disciples?' 15 And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us." 16 And the disciples set out and went to the city, and found it as he had told them; and they prepared the passover. 17 And when it was evening he came with the twelve.
