Acts 2:38 But Peter said to them : Do penance, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of your sins : and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Where your version says do penance, the Greek is translated as repent.

I repent, change my mind, change the inner man (particularly with reference to acceptance of the will of God), repent

Same thing John the Baptist told folks to do.

If you don't have the right translation that matches with the Greek, the rest of your theology will be way off.

Only the douay-rheims bible translates the word as penance.
