William Blake's Interpretation of This passage

For Centuries, Scholars have puzzled over the identity of the "Whore of Babylon". Luther said it was the Pope. The Pope said it was Luther. Hal Lindsay said it was the EU, and Matthew Henry said it was Islam. The text actually IDENTIFIES the place where "she" is from. The roiling waters from which she emerges are “The waters you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages."

The entire WORLD is the Whore.

In the world in which John of Patmos lived, such a definition would be unthinkable. How could the WHOLE WORLD, with all its varying cultures, languages, religions, tribes, and customs, be ONE Monstrous entity? Yet, now, with the Internet, instant communication, instant translations, and supersonic jet travel, such a thing is entirely possible. It is fun to speculate as to who she may be, but when the text offers an interpretation within a few verses of a parable or vision, it is logical to accept that explanation.

Troubled Oceans representing the Gentile World is a common theme, especially in Psalms and the Prophets. John was a bit more colorful in his symbolism, but it is harmonious with the rest of Scripture.
