What Does it Mean to Have Your Marriage Blessed?

Q: My daughter stopped practicing her faith and was married to a protestant in his church. Now she has come back, and her protestant husband is preparing to become a Catholic too, next Easter. They understand that their marriage isn’t valid in the eyes of the Catholic Church, but the parish priest told them he can just “bless their marriage” and it will be all right. Can that possibly be true? –Eamon

I know the Catholics have taken a lot of scorn over the past decade+. I could understand if many were a bit defensive.

Call me a troll, or accuse me of false motives. I did not come here to argue with you, or anyone. I simply wanted to understand your faith better.

Have a safe, and enjoyable weekend.

No, don’t do that. I did not mean to put you to work. I appreciate the effort.

Your relationship with God may be personal, but it's not exclusive, you have to sully yourself with the rest of us sinners. Your question goes to the heart of the issue of whether Our Lord established a Church or not. If He did then everything that Catholicism teaches follows.

Great answer. You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

I had a couple of other questions, but that answers them as well.

The only Catholic question left is why do short plaid skirts with knee socks look so good on a woman?

I don't know why either but it's true. I've bought about half a dozen plaid skirts for my wife and much to her annoyance every time she puts one on I end up saying "ok, no, you can't leave the house dressed like that."

I’m easily confused. This couple, one of whom HAD BEEN Catholic but then converted to a Protestant denomination, married in a Protestant church. This writer is saying the church doesn’t recognize that marriage?? That the marriage requires a Catholic blessing if the one partner returns to the Catholic Church and the other converts?

Yet, if, say, 2 Protestants marry in their church, and become divorced (which their church recognizes), the Catholic Church recognizes that marriage and will not allow a re-marriage of either divorcee to a Catholic within the Catholic Church? I think that’s the Church position. SO why does the church not recognize the marriage in question, assuming they were both members of the Protestant denomination in whose church they married?

Now that our interaction is finished, I am compelled to share that I have known, still know, and continue to meet Catholics all of my life.

In my neck of the woods, Catholicism is the practiced faith of most.

You sir, are a piss poor example of a Catholic. I cannot fathom why I ever approached you for counsel. I know this just breaks your heart. To be sure, my Protestant faith is chalked full of piss poor examples as well.

Dear EDINVA,

Much of the answer is that it's difficult to formally leave the Catholic Church. One can easily be a bad Catholic. One can easily be a fallen-away Catholic. It's tougher to become truly an ex-Catholic.

Just going to a non-Catholic Church isn't gonna do it. It could get you excommunicated, but of itself, it's not going to get you unpoped.

Hope that helps.

Dear laotzu,

My heart is broken in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I am crucified with Christ. I am happy.

Dear laotzu,

Unpoped is certainly a word, although sources say it is archaic. In my experience, it has usually been used pejoratively, by non-Catholics, to describe someone who defects from Catholic faith. To leave one’s submission to the pope, as it were.

I use the word infrequently, but with my tongue placed firmly in my cheek.

And you are the one that introduced it. You are only here to weaken the Catholic faith, and make them look like idiots. What a troll.

The power of Christ compels you. The power of Christ compels you.

So you guys really fall for that stuff, and repeat it...

So what, you guys put a hex on people??? No one is bound to your religion or any other religion...Instead of listening to mindless prattle, you might want to ask a former Catholic if he/she is still a Catholic...
