Julius Caesar's attempt to adapt the calendar year to the time required by the earth to make a complete revolution around the sun. The Gregorian calendar, devised by Pope Gregory XIII, superseded it in 1582 and is now in almost universal use, correcting the Julian year to the astronomical year.
