Catholic Boston College to honor John Kerry, Cardinal O’Malley urged to withdraw

BOSTON, May 15, 2014 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts today criticized Jesuit administered Boston College for its decision to confer an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on U. S. Secretary of State John F. Kerry, who has also been invited to serve as the university's 2014 Commencement speaker. The League is also urging Cardinal Sean O'Malley, the Archbishop of Boston, to repeat his 2013 decision to withdraw from the commencement because of the honoree's advocacy of abortion.

In their 2004 statement, Catholics in Political Life, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said: "The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions."

Secretary Kerry is a supporter of legal abortion, the public funding of abortion, partial birth abortion, abortions at military hospitals and buffer zones limiting free speech around abortion clinics. He has also endorsed contraception, cloning, embryonic stem cell research, physician assisted suicide, same gender marriage, federal gay rights legislation, the distribution of condoms to minors, family planning programs as part of U.S. foreign aid, and taxpayer financing of both Planned Parenthood and the U. N. Fund for Population Activities.

As a U.S. Senator, Kerry received a 100% rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America. As a presidential candidate in 2004, Kerry was endorsed by the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and promised, if elected, to appoint only those jurists who agree with Roe v. Wade to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Last year BC honored Enda Kenny, and Cardinal O'Malley refused to attend. Consistency and any claim to moral authority require that he boycott the graduation again this year.

Now, one of those bishops, the archbishop of Boston, Cardinal Sean O’Malley, also made some news by announcing that he agreed with the Catholic Action League, that he could not in good conscience attend the Boston College graduation next Monday at which the aforementioned Enda Kenny, prime minister of Ireland, is to ­receive an honorary degree and give the commencement speech.

O’Malley accused Kenny of “aggressively promoting abortion legislation,” which is an odd way to describe a democratically elected leader of a republic following the mandatory legal advice of the highest court in the land."

Cardinal O’Malley should do more than not attend graduation. He should have the fortitude of Jesus Christ. He should advise the Jesuits that they are in fact being servants of Satan in inviting a man who condones everything sinful that the democratic party stands for today. He should state it in no uncertain terms that they are wrong, totally wrong.
If he would, I think it would go a long way in bringing some people back to church.

Why aren't Catholics who support abortion excommunicated? Is there a mass or other religious aspect to the BC graduation?

Are ALL institutions that we're supposed to be able to trust out of control? Having a pro-abortion speaker at a Catholic school's graduation is way out of line. JMHO
