AFAIK, the word “Protestant” was invented by Protestants.

You may be right; as I have no idea where it actually came from. Sounds right; as Luther was 'protest'ing the excesses of the Church at the time.

IIRC, the actual term came from a post-Luther controversy, and wasn’t originally applied as broadly as it is today. I.e., it was just one group of Protestants who actually called themselves “Protestant.”

I see where THIS number is bandied about:
