As I read the stories about beer companies and politicians boycotting the various St Patrick's Day parades all I can think is "good". They only showed up for personal gain, either to increase sales or to wave to crowds and try to scam some extra votes from a community they don't care about. Now the politicians have an excuse to not bother and the beer companies have, I guess, determined that gays are their true target market and good luck to them with that.

Now the parades can return a little bit to what they are supposed to be, a celebration of the Saint and of Irish culture (specifically Irish Catholic culture) without a bunch of carpet bagging strap-hangers corrupting the moment.

I agree that the parades were about the saint and Irish culture.

It’s the extent to which it honors the Saint, though, that will preserve it from some of these straphangers trying to butt in. (no pun intended)

Culture, on the other hand, changes.

Better to keep the “politics” out of these festive parade events.
