Punk Rocker Describes His Return to Catholicism
The Catholic Herald (UK) ^ | 1/28/14 | Madeleine Teahan

Posted on 01/29/2014 2:29:38 PM PST by marshmallow

The original drummer from renowned punk rock band, The Clash, has written about his spiritual reawakening in his new book.

In his autobiography, The Strange Case of Doctor Terry and Mr Chimes, baptised Catholic Terry Chimes, who drummed on The Clash’s eponymous debut album and toured with the band in the early 1980s, writes about his journey back to the Catholic faith.

Chimes describes stumbling across a copy of CS Lewis’s book Mere Christianity at a car boot sale in 1998 and reading about Lewis’s analysis of the sin of pride.

Chimes said: “There was a chapter entitled The Great Sin. The great sin is pride, the tendency we all have to think we are better than someone else. I had always known that pride existed but wondered why it’s referred to as the great sin. That was until I realised the significance of pride as an obstacle to spiritual growth.

“The problem with pride is that those who have the most see it the least. CS Lewis said that if you have done some good works, read some spiritual books, perhaps practiced meditation or given up drinking and you take pride in that, thinking that you are more spiritual than someone else, then Satan will rub his hands with glee, because he will have caught you in a spiritual trap from which escape is very difficult.”

He continued: “As I read those words I had the chilling awareness that I have been in just such a trap for twenty years. I put the book down and went to sit on the sofa. I was reeling from the realisation that I’d been in a trap for all of that time. Within minutes I was having the most extraordinary experience of my life.”

If you know anything about Lewis, you know he was a mere Christian, and didn't profess to be anything else. (Anglican, Catholic, Methodist, non-denominational)

I wonder what his thoughts are now regarding the lyrics to Death or Glory.

One of my all-time favorite bands, The Clash, I'm forever grateful for their rescuing me from the disco cancer, but good God they were such leftists!!!!!!

But I’d wager more Roman Catholics have been led back to their faith by Lewis than any number of explicitly Catholic writers.

Actually, if you read Lewis’s spiritual autobiography, “Surprised by Joy,” he recounts something of a similar spiritual awakening generated by his happening upon, “The Everlasting Man,” by GK Chesterton, the famous Catholic apologist.

Imagine being formed by the Protestant Reformation Anti-Catholic crowd and having a spiritual epiphany to become Catholic. That is a personal battle for a lot of people, and I can understand that.

“You will know them by their fruits”, is something that I have heard many of God’s people understand with comments such as, “it is impressive how active the Catholic Church is in anti abortion movements” etc. Another factor influences personal friends of mine are the issue of families and divorce rates. Catholics continue to have the lowest. http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/catholics-continue-to-have-lowest-divorce-rates-report-finds/

That is why my best friend converted. It was very hard for her because her family had a lot of anymosity towards Catholics. Her dysfunctional family I should say. I think that in addition to knowing some nice Catholic families that impressed her, she appreciated the lack of anymosity in the Catholic Church.

What she did was brave, it cost her relationships with siblings, and she has no doubts. God knows our circumstances and hearts and he will judge accordingly, He will also judge those that disparrage His people and His church.

It is interesting how Jews seem to have an instinctive reluctance to offend Catholics. Some may not like us, but they don’t trash talk us like other Christians. I’m sure that is out of respect and understanding of who their God is. They know it isn’t right.

If you believe I presume you tread lightly when dealing with Protestant Reformational Christians.

I was singing the second stanza myself when reading this article. Rather prophetic....

There is Catholicism, and then there is everything else. One may choose the Mustard Tree or the thousands of wild mushrooms spawned by the curse of Protestantism ranging from Jim Jones to David Koresh to Rev. Schuller to Rev. Graham Rev. Jeremiah Wright to TD Jakes to Joel Osteen and anyone else who want to make “Scriptural Readings” a nice source of income for themselves and their families. The sad part of all this is the mushrooms theologies in time wither and die but millions are led astray, mostly the gullible multitudes that pack the song and dance theaters for Sunday “Services” in mega cities.

I don’t tread. I will certainly defend my faith when I hear lies. I certainly don’t do things like remind them that their faith was established because King Henry wanted a new and improved chick. Haha

All those original Protestant churches are in bad shape. That is sad. Lutheran is very similar to Catholic Church, but it seems the “gates of hades” have been prevailing with them lately.

The ones that freak me out a little are the rest of the 40,000 “Christian churches” that keep popping up everywhere like individually owned and operated Taco Bell franchises.

Today I opened a tumblr account. My surname is Pastor. I looked up family members and names like, Pastor Cash, Pastor Luck and Money, Pastor Love, etc. all “Christian churches”. What a horrible mockery of our God.

I pray for them.

ROTFL Catholics claimed we had 30,000 just yesterday!

And on the religious section of FR, an anti-totalitarian site, yet another thread pushing the pseudo-Christian religion of one of the most totalitarian religious systems ever known to man, the Papacy.
