Will Lunar Eclipses Cause Four Blood Moons in 2014 and 2015?

Mark Biltz is the founder of El Shaddai Ministries, a Hebrew roots resource and teaching ministry located near Tacoma, Washington. Recently Biltz has attracted attention in presentations and YouTube videos about end-time prophecy and the Lord’s return. He discusses the significance of four total lunar eclipses that will fall on the dates of Passover and Sukkot in 2014 and 2015. The Crucifixion of Jesus was at the time of Passover, and Biltz believes that the Second Coming of Christ must happen at Sukkot, so he argues that this relatively unusual event of four lunar eclipses on these four dates has great significance. He also mentions two solar eclipses in 2015 having prophetic implications. Because total lunar eclipses often appear red, people sometimes call a totally eclipsed moon a “blood moon.” Therefore, Biltz suggests that these eclipses are a fulfillment of the prophecy in Joel 2:31 of the sun being darkened and the moon turning to blood and suggests that they may presage the Lord’s return. Others, such as John Hagee, have begun speaking about this as well. Let us examine some of these claims.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the earth’s shadow (the umbra) falls on the moon. If the earth’s shadow completely covers the moon, it is a total eclipse. But a partial lunar eclipse happens if the earth’s umbra only partially covers the moon. Because the earth has an atmosphere that bends light around its edge, the earth’s umbra is not completely dark. So, the totally eclipsed moon will reflect the color of the light contained in the earth’s shadow. The earth’s atmosphere scatters out shorter-wavelength light (green through violet) leaving mostly longer-wavelength light (red, orange, and yellow) in the earth’s umbra.

There will be a string of four “blood moons” in the year 5775, and one of them will shine over the Passover seder. Whenever this happened in the past, enormous events took place in Jewish history.

It starts with the Book of Joel, Chapter 3:3-4: “And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord come.”

The verse about the sun turning dark and the moon turning to blood, is at the center of a new, hot, Christian bestseller titled “Four Blood Moons,” by Pastor John Hagee. It is based on a discovery by Pastor Mark Biltz, who runs a “Hebrew roots” ministry in Tacoma, Washington: Red Moons.

Biltz’s website declares: “We do not want to convert Jews to Christianity or Christians to Judaism,” which works for me. He based his observation on the verse in Genesis 1:14: “And God said, Let there be lights in the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years.”

God originally plans to use the heavenly lights as signs, and the prophet Joel foretells that a blood moon would mark the day of the Lord – then it stands to reason that some dramatic stuff should be taking place when a blood moon is up in the sky.

The science of the “blood moon” phenomenon is fairly simple. It is created by a partial lunar eclipse. When the Earth’s shadow covers the moon completely, we get a total eclipse. A partial lunar eclipse happens wen the Earth’s shadow covers the moon only partially. The earth atmosphere bends light around its edge, and scatters out shorter-wavelength light (green through violet), leaving longer-wavelength light (red, orange, and yellow) in the Earth’s shadow. This is also why sunsets and sunrises generally appear red.

As is the case with most miraculous events that can be explained scientifically, the miracle is not in the natural phenomenon, but rather in its timing. So the Book of Joel describes solar eclipse, followed by a partial lunar eclipse, as precursors of the Day of the Lord.

The prophecy in Joel, like most prophecies, is surreal, beautiful, and open to many interpretations. But we can take away from it the notion of a blood moon as a sign, and check out the calendar for the next bunch of partial lunar eclipses.

That’s what Pastor Biltz did, he looked at NASA’s tables for solar and lunar eclipses and found a string of lunar and solar eclipses happening in 2014 and 2015 and then nothing like it for the rest of the 21st century. In 2015 there will be two solar and lunar eclipses two weeks apart (on the new moon and full moon) one in the spring and one in the fall. This could possibly produce four blood moon eclipses in a row, which is definitely something to write home about.

OK, now hold on to your seats, please: we’ve had the Tetrad phenomenon (a string of four moons partially or completely eclipsed,) twice in the last century, both times on the night of the Passover seder: in 5710 (1949-50) and in 5728 (1967-68).

The year 5710 came right after the establishment of the State of Israel.

The year 5728 came right after the liberation of Jerusalem.

The next string of four blood moons is coming Passover seder night, 5775 (2014-15) – a year from this Pesach.

Jan talks to Pastor Mark Biltz asking him if the 2014-2015 blood moons are a significant sign in the Heavens? The Bible asks us to watch for signs in the Heavens. Observing these forthcoming blood moons is not an exercise in date-setting for end-time events. In the past, the blood moon tetrads (four in a row) took place within date patterns that dramatically affected Israel and then the world. Biltz has never suggested that the Rapture or any other end-time event will fit into this pattern as some accuse. He found the information on the NASA Web site and is reporting on how it has played out in history and how it could play out in the future. Jan also talks about two Hollywood films that were made to mock and scoff Jesus’ return, a definite sign of the time.

There is a little bit more than just having a blood-red moon coinciding with Passover or Sukkot. We are talking about 4 consecutive blood-red moons and that has apparently happened only 3 times in the last 500 years. It first happened in 1493-94, following the expulsion of Jews from Spain. Next it happened in 1949-50, following the Israeli declaration of independence and war. Last (and it does not show as a tetrad in this article) was in 1967-68 and followed the 6 Day War. NASA says the next tetrad will take place in 2014-15.

Still not impressed? 2015 will be a Semittah (sabattical) year, which happens every 7 years. It seems like every 7 years, God does try to get our attention: on 73 it was Roe vs. Wade, 80 the Iran-Iraq War, 87 supernova that could be seen by the naked eye, 94 Arafat returns to the ME, 01 was 9/11, and 08 the stock market crash.

Yes, it can be a coincidence... or rather a series or coincidences. Or it may be a sign that something is about to happen. Mind you, I am not talking about the Rapture, since no man knows the date. And it is not the Second Coming because there will be a 7 year Tribulation prior to it. Still, I believe that something big is going to happen.
