Does not the Bible regard homosexuality an abomination to God?

Over and over and over again — starting in Genesis and ending in The Revelation.
I think you’re missing the point. The Church condemns homosexuality as a disorder. It does not believe that a fleeting homosexual desire is sinful on the part of the person, however, because it proceeds from a disorder which he (or she) does not control. To act on, or to nourish, that desire IS SINFUL, however. The Church applies the same principle to heterosexuals. If a normal, healthy man has a fleeting thought pass through his mind about how attractive he finds his best friend’s wife that can be problematic but not inherently sinful. When he dwells on it to the point of lust or inordinate desire, then it is sinful.
By the way, I should point out that the Church - relying on scripture - lists the “sin of Sodom” as one of the sins which cries out to heaven for vengeance. http://www.catholicculture.org/commentary/articles.cfm?id=29
