In an interview with KQED Newsroom Friday, San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone talked about sports, gay marriage and the power of Pope Francis, who last week was named Time magazines Person of the Year.
Cordileone had a rough landing in famously liberal San Francisco when Pope Benedict XVI named him archbishop last year. As a leading supporter of Prop. 8, which banned same-sex marriage in California until the Supreme Court threw it out, Cordileones appointment generated anger and concern in the LGBT community.
In 2008, when Cordileone was still a bishop in San Diego, he helped organize efforts to get Prop. 8 on the California ballot and he personally contributed at least $6,000, according to state campaign finance records.
In our discussion, Archbishop Cordileone said hes been reaching out in hopes of getting to know gay Catholics, joining parishioners for meals at Most Holy Redeemer Church in the Castro.
When we dont interact with each other, we can make decisions or get images based on stereotypes that happens on both sides, the archbishop said.
When asked what hes learned from those interactions, Cordileone said hes come to understand how gay people have suffered.newsroom-115x65
Theyve been disowned by their families, he said. Theyve been harmed and they want to come to a place that will accept them for who they are. And affirm them. So it tenderizes us.

If the Archbishop is feeling tenderized then I suggest someone higher up stick a fork in him. He's sounding overdone.
A Louisville Slugger will do that, too.
If the Archbishop wants to talk to gay Catholics, he can just have a meeting with his priests, I am sure some of them are gay. In fact they have been talking to them and hiding them for years. The so called clean-up is not near done.
This reminds me of those poor moneychangers Jesus drove out of the Temple. They lost their income, their status in the community and were shunned by true believers. If only Archbishop Salvatore Cordleone were there to console them and accepted them.
Getting tenderized at the Tenderloin. /s
That’s. a very unfortunate choice of words.
Mostly it disgusts us.
We don’t like it when you flaunt your sexuality.
Keep it to yourself!
ten·der·loin (tndr-loin) n.
1. The tenderest part of a loin of beef, pork, or similar cut of meat.
2. A city district notorious for vice and graft.
[Sense 2, after the Tenderloin, an area of New York City (from the easy income it once afforded corrupt policemen).]
Ever walk into SF’s tenderloin?
Whew! What a hellhole.
Hammering meat always leads to tenderization.
We all understand that we should hate sin and love the sinner but affirming them in their sin accomplishes neither.
The process of tenderizing serves to break down collagens or connective tissue doesnt it? Couldnt those connective tissues be compared to our connections to each other and to God? Accepting unrepentant homosexuals in our churches surely has that affect.
I see the usual catholic bashers are out. If you knew anything about this Bishop, you’d no he was as orthodox as can be on the issue of gays and gay marriage and led the charge against it in California. His only point is that you have to treat all people as human beings just as did Christ. That’s not the same as condoning their behavior. But if your a Catholic basher, you can’t let facts get in your way.
It depends on what the definition of "who they are" is.
If they define themselves by their sexual perversion, acceptance is not possible. If they define themselves as abhorring their sins and in true contrition trying to overcome besetting sin, then acceptance is mandatory.
This applies to all of us sinners, not just homosexuals.
What a weird choice of words. You just know references to a meat mallet are going to be made as a result.
It should be pretty obvious why a large percentage of the Catholic priests are especially sympathetic to the homsexual crowd. I can love a homosexual enough to stop and render aid or help feed him / her but when they act like the hostile gay activists that we see so often and try to foist their agendas on us and our children it really makes it difficult to want to do so.
No, it doesn't tenderize us. It desensitizes us.
There's a real problem in our society when how someone has sex becomes their identity.
And here I thought there was more to people I meet than who they sleep with.
Nothing quite pushes a Catholic over the edge like pointing out the facts about Catholicism.
This bishop is exactly WHY there are problems in the church and it is losing credibility by the day.
Of course, Catholic knee jerk reaction of crying *hater* and *basher* only further the problem by giving the appearance of being in denial about the facts that are plain to everyone else to see.
“Do not be yoked with evil-doers.” 2 Corinthians 6:14. Christians should avoid relationships that compromise their faith.
In this context, the Robertson family should end their relationship with the A & E bosses who attack their Christian faith.
