Belief in the Virgin Birth an optional extra, new Swedish archbishop declares (Church of Sweden)

The Church of Sweden has elected its first woman archbishop.

On 15 October 2013 the Rt. Rev. Antje Jackelén, Bishop of Lund, was elected Archbishop of Uppsala and primate of the Church of Sweden.

She also objected to making belief in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ a benchmark of the Christian faith. “It is strange that the question of the virgin birth has become something of a faith test,” she told Kyrkans Tidning, adding the Bible had been interpreted in different ways across time and cultures and that many different cultures had made use of a virgin birth as a way to show a particular person's self-importance.

Obviously does not believe the genesis account either "And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel." Genesis 3:15.

In the Old Testament linage is under the male line, but here it talks about "her offspring". We take this to mean the seed of Mary (Christ), Mary being the Woman, and Christ's victory over Satan (the Serpent).

Perhaps this theologian also doesn't believe in hell either? And not far behind, a dismissal of the problem of Sin too?

Reminds me of the late, great comedian Flip Wilson's "Church of What's Happening Now". So-called clergy and denominations these days seem to believe that THEY know better. I think they may be in for a shock.

Ping to the Swedish Ping List

The Church of Sweden is so liberal--read "apostate"--it makes the ELCA almost seem Lutheran.

This could also use a Lutheran ping—even though the Church of Sweden, ostensibly “Lutheran,” is hardly Lutheran in its doctrine and practice.

Its pretty sad that those in Sweden most likely to affirm the virgin birth live in Malmo. (I did not say Swedes...)

It is ironic that this group both reveres Mary and generally reduces women to the status of property and chattel.
