Writing in America Magazine, Auxiliary Bishop Robert McElroy of San Francisco argued that the Church in the United States “must elevate the issue of poverty to the very top of its political agenda, establishing poverty alongside abortion as the pre-eminent moral issues the Catholic community pursues at this moment in our nation’s history.”
“Both abortion and poverty countenance the deaths of millions of children in a world where government action could end the slaughter,” he continued. “Both abortion and poverty, each in its own way and to its own degree, constitute an assault on the very core of the dignity of the human person, instrumentalizing life as part of a throwaway culture. The cry of the unborn and the cry of the poor must be at the core of Catholic political conversation in the coming years because these realities dwarf other threats to human life and dignity that confront us today.”

Charity starts with the individual.
I would love to see the CHURCH pick up her responsibility for charity. I just don’t see how politics enters the picture.

That’s sad. I don’t let foolish people influence me that much. If the Catholic Faith is true, it’s true even if Bishop Whosis and Cardinal Whatsisface are dingbats. If it’s not true, why would anyone even go through the motions?

Agree 100%. Who people are often times has very little to do with who God is.
The problem is whether the church remains true to the faith. I left the church but not the faith. The Bible is the Word, not the ramblings of some bishop.
Always. God IS, is is is is is. People wouldn’t be at all without God BEING always. “In Him we live and move and have our being.” “In Him all things hold together.”
I can respect a contention that the Catholic Church in its authoritative statements is just wrong about this or that. However, the Church has never said that everyone in the Church is right about everything - only that the Church as an institution teaches the Truth about God. Bishop Whatsis is no more authoritative than the lady in my prayer group who gets all her opinions from network television. Sometimes people are just wrong.
Well hate to break it to the Prelate, but governments all over the world and especially in the West have failed miserably. Every effort by the US to help the poor ends up killing more babies in the womb. With secular government intervention comes "family planning" and free offers to abort babies (murder).
I for one after having to sit through all those Jesuit lectures on Liberation Theology (LT) know where Pope Francis and the Prelate are taking us...To the socialistic non spiritual Liberation Theology model.
So let us not be fooled by this. Pope Francis came from the "hot bed" of LT in Latin America. If Pope Francis is really concerned about the poor, he should be encouraging all churches and individuals to give directly to the poor instead of relying on the secular governments to institute their atheistic/agnostic population control eugenics model.
Maybe melt down some of that gold in Vatican city and support some single pregnant moms.
Or better yet, let the Gospel speak for itself because with those who heed the call of the Master, will live moral lives, get married and have kids and abortion would not even be a thought.
Whether the Church is teaching the true Faith is a different question from whether Bishop X does. Individual bishops can be in error. The Church as an institution does not teach error.
At least, that is what faithful Catholics believe. If you’re not Catholic, cebu, God’s going to handle everything anyway.
I agree. Anything the secular eugenics governments touch leads to more abortions. We should all be giving directly to the poor. The poor right up in front of our faces and to missionaries ministering to the physically and spiritually poor.
And yes the Body of Christ, we the Church have failed for the most part. The pursuit of mammon resulted in the poor running to Molech for support. And when someone approaches the altar of Molech, they offer their babies to the fire.

Well you do have to admit the Catholic Church has a known history of not tolerating those who point out the error of the Popes and clergy. Ask Luther et al.
There are disagreements between the Catholic Church and other Christian churches on a variety of points. However, that kind of bedrock theological disagreement is not related to whether my Bishop is a turkey. (He’s not, by the way ... a fine fellow despite his unfortunate chin.)
People who call themselves Lutheran today disagree with Martin Luther on many of the key theological issues, just as people who call themselves Methodist have little in common with John and Charles Wesley.
Calm down folks and read what he said without adding to it.
The right to life is fundamental.
No difference between starvation and abortion - neither the fetus nor the child/adult that is starved to death has a choice in the matter.
Find satan where he is - in those running from the Church because they have selfishness in their hearts for sharing the gifts God blessed them with - like two strong arms.
How do you stop poverty that leads to starvation? INSERT SHOUTING HERE.
