CANTICLE
In the Divine Office a sacred chant from Scripture apart from the psalms. In the Roman Breviary there are many canticles from the Old Testament. The three evangelical canticles of the New Testament recited daily in the Divine Office are the Benedictus of Zechariah, Magnificat of the Blessed Virgin, and the Nunc Dimittis of Simeon. (Etym. Latin canticulum, a little song.)
