Was that supposed to be some form of Soviet exceptionalism? I think I like the American kind much better.

waters 10 Celsius (14 Fahrenheit) below zero. Huh?
To: juliosevero
The Eastern Front witnessed great brutality on both sides. The Nazis set the tone when they began to shoot Soviet prisoners of war and their Einsatzgruppen rolled across the Eastern Soviet Union shooting civilians, mostly Jews. As the Soviets pushed them back, they destroyed cities and killed many more civilians.
Yes, the Soviet soldiers responded with brutality and rape, but the Nazis could expect no quarter.

From the article:
"In the dark and frozen night of January 30, 1945, the hospital ship is sighted by a Soviet submarine, which shoots three torpedoes, condemning thousands of women and children to death in waters 10 Celsius (14 Fahrenheit) below zero. " Sounds like an overt act of war to me. I think Germany should have immediately declared war against the Soviet Union.

Yup, no good guys on the Eastern Front. Just bad and worse.

I think they need a better F to C chart
of course the ocean waters can be well below freezing without freezing, it’s salty and its always moving.

-10 C does = 14 F
But seawater begins to Freeze at -2 C.
They were likely talking about the recorded air temps at the time.

Yes, the Soviet soldiers responded with brutality and rape, but the Nazis could expect no quarter. Let's be fair, the Soviets had a HUGE head start in mass killings and brutality over the Nazis; dating back into the '20s. The Nazis were just better at documenting it.

Worse than the shipwreck of Titanic is Wilhelm Gustloffs sinking. And much worser than Wilhelm Gustloffs sinking is the shipwreck of whole societies into the abysses of destruction of the chameleonic socialist ideology. Ping for later.

The Nazis and Commies worshipped a G-d, just a different one.
Nazism was a combination of mercantilism with darwinism.
Fascism as practiced by Mussolini was mercantilism with a pretense of efficiency, though he really never did get the Italian trains to run on time.
Soviet Communism was based on Marxism which denies darwinism. The idea that some people are better than others at different jobs is anathema to marxists. If some were better, then they should be paid better, and that would be exploitation!

New Soviet Man was not darwinian evolution (variation followed by selection) it was Lamarkian (characteristics derived from exposture to the correct environment).

Not according to Leon Trotsky.
Man will make it his purpose to master his own feelings, to raise his instincts to the heights of consciousness, to make them transparent, to extend the wires of his will into hidden recesses, and thereby to raise himself to a new plane, to create a higher social biologic type, or, if you please, a superman.

I have a number of issues with this article. For one thing,
Wilhelm Gustloff was not a hospital ship. It had served as such early in the war but was later converted to a military transport ship. It was also fitted with AAA batteries, making it technically a warship.
Also, if the water temperature had been 14 degrees below zero, the ship wouldn't have sunk because the sea would have been frozen.
The ship might not have been sunk had the skipper not turned on his navigation lights, a foolish thing to do in a war zone.
