Hi, metmom,
You wrote:
The apostle John tells us that everything we need to know to be saved can be found in his gospel. John 20:30-31: "Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name."
Two quick(?) responses:
1) Your comment (whose content I'll address in a moment) doesn't address my own point (i.e. that sola Scriptura is an anti-Biblical, self-contradictory invention of man) at all. 2) Jesus Himself said a good deal more than your quote, don't you think? Our Lord also said that "those who endure to the end will be saved" (Matthew 10:22 and 24:13--interesting that He said it twice, no?), "unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His Blood, you have no life in you" (John 6:53), "If you would enter life, keep the commandments." (Matthew 19:17), and too many others to mention here. "Believing" is certainly necessary... but it's not sufficient; even the devils believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God... and they tremble (cf. James 2:19).
No... with all due respect for the sincerity of your belief: we need more than sound-bytes and bumper-stickers to understand what Our Lord wants, and to attain salvation.
