The Lord in a Plastic Cup -- Giving Communion at WYD in Rio (Rio de Janeiro) scurrilous, thoughtless, horrifying forms of an unworthy giving of Communion and a similar reception are customary to Catholics. At World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro the poor understanding of the Eucharist has reached a new high point of slovenliness.
Pope Benedict XVI. went with his example and gave Holy Communion only to those faithful who knelt and received on the tongue. It was a contribution to the restoration of reverence and comprehension for the Holy. The priests employed were informed only to give Communion on the tongue. The papal example found imitation, yet wasn't driven through the inculcation of general guidelines.
The papal example hasn't changed much under Pope Francis, but for the most part he doesn't give Communion, and is therefore not as visible. The selected priests are no longer instructed as before to give only Communion on the tongue, because besides those, who give according to Benedikts XVI.'s form, have stepped in those who as in earlier times, give Communion on the hand and pass It out over people's heads.
In Freiburg at Breisgau, the President of the German Bishops' Conference, Archbishop Robert Zollitsch whose example on the closing Mass on the papal stage defied the Pope's example, put female Extraordinary Ministers out, who gave Communion in the hand.
World Youth Day 2013 in Rio de Janeiro showed a lack of sacramental understanding of the Eucharist, visible in a new "modern" form of Holy Eucharist. The consecrated Hosts were held in plastic cups. These containers went from hand to hand, were passed out by priests, laity, women and men, and give to the faithful, being passed over their heads.
The lack of imagination of the organizers for a worthy reception or distribution of Communion is astonishing. It's much otherwise in the East, as Latin Christians of the West kneel on the ground in shame. On this point the one who accompanies a priest to giving out Communion, should have a small kneeler instead of an umbrella, which could easily facilitate kneeling Communion in every situation.

“scurrilous, thoughtless, horrifying forms of an unworthy giving of Communion and a similar reception are customary to Catholics.”
Silly criticism about plastic cups.
When Christ initiated drinking the wine and breaking bread at His celebration of Passover with His disciples, He likely broke ordinary unleavened bread. The wine was shared in a communal cup that is not described. Each of the elements was part of the celebration of Passover - including drinking wine in the third cup of Redemption.
Somehow these ordinary, everyday elements were “good enough” for the Lord. Ordinary plastic is fine for 3 million people.
Ordinary plastic is fine for 3 million people.”
But it’s not “fine” for the Body of Christ. He deserves much better.
“But its not fine for the Body of Christ. He deserves much better.”
You could make the same case for ordinary matzah that He used.
The Holy Scriptures include not a single verse of how to implement communion - other than the form of the traditional Jewish Passover meal. The plastic cups were used to distribute the (non-matzah) wafers. No big deal.
If it offends some, perhaps they are focused on the wrong thing.
I will only accept Communion on the tongue, my hands are not worthy to hold the Lord.
Well, one could if it was matzah that He broke, but alas, it was “artos” which is “challah”, leavened bread. And we know this by what came after Jesus said to Judah “what you do, do quickly” and some of the disciples were thinking,
John 13:28 But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him. 29 For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, Buy those things we need for the Feast,
The disciples were under no illusion that they were eating a Passover meal when the Passover lamb had yet to be slaughtered. Even the priests testify to this fact.
John 18:28 Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover.
Good for you!
That is the best response, do not get all worked up, it is not worth it.
Do people customarily break-out the good china for Thanksgiving dinner?
Why is that?
Wouldn’t cleanup be much simpler if everyone used paper plates and plastic utensils?
Aren’t paper plates and plastic utensils good enough?
Same here.
Always.
Impromptu? Really? It had been planned for for years.

Interesting. Hands are not worthy to hold the bread, but the tongue is.
Not so much...
“We have already drawn attention to the evidence that Jesus ate the Passover with His disciples in the upper room on Thursday evening (cf. 13:1, 27).550 Why then were these Jews concerned that entering Pilates Praetorium might preclude them from eating the Passover? Had they too not already eaten it the night before? The Passover was the name that the Jews used to describe both the Passover proper and the entire festival that followed it including the feast of Unleavened Bread (cf. Luke 22:1). Evidently it was their continuing participation in this eight-day festival that these Jewish leaders did not want to sacrifice by entering a Gentile residence.”

“Arent paper plates and plastic utensils good enough?”
If I were serving Thanksgiving meals to 3million friends, I can assure you it would be on disposable plates, cups and using plastic utensils ...
Lord:I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but say the word and my soul shall be saved.
The host enters under your roof , not in your hand.
That’s the way I understand it. Good enough for me.
Bible says our tongues are even less worthy than our hands...
Some of us have higher standards.
