The Lord in a Plastic Cup - Giving Communion at WYD in Rio

The Lord in a Plastic Cup -- Giving Communion at WYD in Rio (Rio de Janeiro) scurrilous, thoughtless, horrifying forms of an unworthy giving of Communion and a similar reception are customary to Catholics. At World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro the poor understanding of the Eucharist has reached a new high point of slovenliness.

Pope Benedict XVI. went with his example and gave Holy Communion only to those faithful who knelt and received on the tongue. It was a contribution to the restoration of reverence and comprehension for the Holy. The priests employed were informed only to give Communion on the tongue. The papal example found imitation, yet wasn't driven through the inculcation of general guidelines.

The papal example hasn't changed much under Pope Francis, but for the most part he doesn't give Communion, and is therefore not as visible. The selected priests are no longer instructed as before to give only Communion on the tongue, because besides those, who give according to Benedikts XVI.'s form, have stepped in those who as in earlier times, give Communion on the hand and pass It out over people's heads.

In Freiburg at Breisgau, the President of the German Bishops' Conference, Archbishop Robert Zollitsch whose example on the closing Mass on the papal stage defied the Pope's example, put female Extraordinary Ministers out, who gave Communion in the hand.

World Youth Day 2013 in Rio de Janeiro showed a lack of sacramental understanding of the Eucharist, visible in a new "modern" form of Holy Eucharist. The consecrated Hosts were held in plastic cups. These containers went from hand to hand, were passed out by priests, laity, women and men, and give to the faithful, being passed over their heads.

The lack of imagination of the organizers for a worthy reception or distribution of Communion is astonishing. It's much otherwise in the East, as Latin Christians of the West kneel on the ground in shame. On this point the one who accompanies a priest to giving out Communion, should have a small kneeler instead of an umbrella, which could easily facilitate kneeling Communion in every situation.

Given your cavalier and dismissive attitude toward disrespect shown to the Host,

<><><><

Yes I might have stated my point in a somewhat kinder and gentler fashion. My apologies.

The cavalier and dismissive attitude was not directed towards the Host, for the record.

I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about! Groping, waving hands in the air, getting drunk, etc. I don’t participate in any of that! However, I’m also not intolerant to others as you seem to be. I guess that’s why I have a priest for a friend even though I’m no longer a Catholic. I am, however, a Christian.....something you seem to be lacking in. And, I’ll definitely keep you in prayer.

Methinks He was more likely thrilled at 3 million people celebrating Him.

BINGO! I agree with you completely and so does my priest friend.

And I see no evidence the Almighty encourages or appreciates giddy flash mobs.

Well....I believe that your Pope would disagree with you about the massive crowd that came out to see him in South America. I highly doubt that he considered them a "giddy flash mob". The Pope was honored to have so many young people come out to see him!

And by the way, maybe you should read your Bible - in Jesus day he was met all the time by what would be considered "giddy flash mobs" today! There are over 100 verses that refer to the "crowds" that met Jesus....so I can only concur that God likes crowds/giddy flash mobs.

It’s not a “representation”; it’s His Body. If you think It’s just a “representation, I understand your irreverence of the Blessed Sacrament.

I am NOT irreverent to Communion. I take it very seriously as I'm sure the millions who participated in Brazil did. And I'm absolutely sure that God is pleased that so many wanted to participate in it too. At least the God that I worship is. He is a loving God - not one who would punish or look down on someone who wants to celebrate His son.

Why don't you use your ire and energy to get the Roman Catholic Church to excommunicate those who blaspheme the Sacrament of Communion, like Pelosi, the Kennedys, etc. That bothers me far more than millions participating in the sacrament in Brazil.

I seriously doubt that Jesus had a gold cup and platen at the last supper. That is simply just some artists depiction of it. Show me in the Bible where it states that the Holy Chalice was made of gold or any precious metal!

“That bothers me far more than millions participating in the sacrament in Brazil.”

So are you admitting that the latter does bother you some?

No, I don’t admit that at all. I think that the event was wonderful! 3 million people celebrating communion with the Pope is a wonderful event! I’m not bothered by the method of delivery in the slightest. In fact, my priest buddy thinks those of you that are upset are total idiots!

Oh, so now you're telling an ordained Roman Catholic priest that he's an idiot. Nice. That's real Christian of you.....NOT.

A lot of Roman Catholic priests are idiots; and they get promoted, at that. Look at the USCCB.

Well Father John certainly isn’t one of the idiots! He just believes, as well as I, that 3 million people participating in communion with the Pope is a wonderful thing. Tell me, which of those people would you have excluded from communion?

You are entitled to your own opinion as I am to mine.
