The Lord in a Plastic Cup -- Giving Communion at WYD in Rio (Rio de Janeiro) scurrilous, thoughtless, horrifying forms of an unworthy giving of Communion and a similar reception are customary to Catholics. At World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro the poor understanding of the Eucharist has reached a new high point of slovenliness.
Pope Benedict XVI. went with his example and gave Holy Communion only to those faithful who knelt and received on the tongue. It was a contribution to the restoration of reverence and comprehension for the Holy. The priests employed were informed only to give Communion on the tongue. The papal example found imitation, yet wasn't driven through the inculcation of general guidelines.
The papal example hasn't changed much under Pope Francis, but for the most part he doesn't give Communion, and is therefore not as visible. The selected priests are no longer instructed as before to give only Communion on the tongue, because besides those, who give according to Benedikts XVI.'s form, have stepped in those who as in earlier times, give Communion on the hand and pass It out over people's heads.
In Freiburg at Breisgau, the President of the German Bishops' Conference, Archbishop Robert Zollitsch whose example on the closing Mass on the papal stage defied the Pope's example, put female Extraordinary Ministers out, who gave Communion in the hand.
World Youth Day 2013 in Rio de Janeiro showed a lack of sacramental understanding of the Eucharist, visible in a new "modern" form of Holy Eucharist. The consecrated Hosts were held in plastic cups. These containers went from hand to hand, were passed out by priests, laity, women and men, and give to the faithful, being passed over their heads.
The lack of imagination of the organizers for a worthy reception or distribution of Communion is astonishing. It's much otherwise in the East, as Latin Christians of the West kneel on the ground in shame. On this point the one who accompanies a priest to giving out Communion, should have a small kneeler instead of an umbrella, which could easily facilitate kneeling Communion in every situation.

Am I surprised by this?
Of course not.
More fruits of Vatican II.
True.
Jesus spent His first days on earth in a dirty feeding trough.
There’s a difference between putting the Lord in a dirty feeding trough because it’s all you have and doing so for your own convenience....
But plastic cups are humble!!
This was an interesting article in terms of showcasing an opinion, but of course, in the end it is a division within your church. Leaders on both sides. In terms of the central thrust of your thread, it remains just one view among multiple Catholic views.
I will leave that internal debate to you.
In terms of the Truth of God’s Holy Word... total silence to support the view you advance. Not a single verse that I saw to present as irrefutable evidence.
Still, it was informative about the internecine thing going on. Thanks for directing me to it.
Poor prior planning produces piss-poor performance.
You’re right. This isn’t a biblical issue which is why I think it’s pointless for bible-only Christians to opine on it.
Mat_27:62 On the next day, which was after the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate,
Mar_15:42 And when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, Luk_23:54 And it was Preparation day, and the Sabbath was approaching.
Joh_19:14 And it was the Preparation Day of the Passover week, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Yehuḏim, See your Sovereign!
Joh_19:31 Therefore, since it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the stake on the Sabbath for that Sabbath was a high one the Yehuḏim asked Pilate to have their legs broken, and that they be taken away.
Joh_19:42 There, then, because of the Preparation Day of the Yehuḏim, they laid יהושע, because the tomb was near.
To be the "perfect" sacrifice, Messiah had to die on the stake at the same day that the Passover lambs were being slaughtered. And per Torah, the meal of Unleavened Bread in which the sacrifice is eaten takes place after dark when it is not the 15th. Y'shua would not have swayed from these instructions and if He did, then He certainly was not perfect now was He? It does not matter what the Jews did and do to this day as they still hold their oral law above the Torah of Moshe which is the veil that continues to blind them from seeing their true Messiah.
Some might argue that Jesus’ humble birth and life were not incidental, but intentional.
As for me, I don’t really care what vessel is used, as long as Communion is celebrated respectfully. After all, Scripture is clear that it’s “bread” that we eat (to use a term Paul used, http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Corinthians%2011:27-28&version=DRA and elsewhere), and not corpuscles.
“Y’shua would not have swayed from these instructions and if He did, then He certainly was not perfect now was He? It does not matter what the Jews did and do to this day as they still hold their oral law above the Torah of Moshe which is the veil that continues to blind them from seeing their true Messiah. “
We can agree on the last phrase of your post...
“Poor prior planning produces piss-poor performance.”
Sure, but who knew how many would actually turn out? apparently, the plastic cups were planned for and purchased.
The Pope then promulgated the May 28, 1969 Instruction Memoriale Domine. In summary, the document states:
1) The bishops of the world were overwhelmingly against Communion in the hand.
2) ÒThis manner of distributing Holy Communion (that is, the priest placing the Host on the tongue of the communicants) must be observed

Seems like that gremlin is back again.
Shoot the darn thing so it doesn't come back...
Oh, one more thing, it seems like response time is going south too.
Take care.

Even if you take Communion in the hand, the host is going to hit the tongue sooner or later.
Do you think that missionaries in the depths of 3rd world countries pass around a gold cup? Good grief! It's far more important to spread the Gospel than be so humanistic and legalistic about methods of delivery!
Can you imagine how The Lord feels to have His Holy Eucharist handed out like bubblegum at Chuck E. Cheese?
<><><>
No, and neither can you.
Methinks He was more likely thrilled at 3 million people celebrating Him.
Given your cavalier and dismissive attitude toward disrespect shown to the Host, please set aside some time to read the link given in #32. The small effort could save your soul. And I see no evidence the Almighty encourages or appreciates giddy flash mobs.
You are free to wave your hands in the air, grope each other, vocalize gibberish, get drunk on the wine, AND MORE! We traditional Catholics won’t try to stop you, only pray for you.
