Jesus knew and knows that bad things to good people. His teaching is that death, accident, calamity can come to us at anytime, and that we should not obsess with injustice at the expense of praying for our own souls:

I do not believe for a moment that Pope John Paul II condoned the evil that was inside the Church. I believe Pope John Paul II was well aware of the evil that resides inside men, and that he chose to pray for their souls.

The fact is that the Secretary of 18 years for one of the most deviant Priests in the Catholic Church in recent years told Pope John Paul II about it and he wouldnt do anything.
The Secretary tried to get an audience with Sodano and was denied.
Nothing was done about this deviant until Pope John Paul died.
