Matthew is authoritative because the Words of Christ are recorded in the Gospel.

-— developing resource material that will provide an easy way to look at the Scriptures in the light of Patristic and Medieval sources as well as the teachings of the Magisterium. -—

Sounds great.

“That’s wishful thinking.”

No, thinking Protestant anti-Catholics won’t lie is wishful thinking. Thinking Protestant anti-Catholics can think is wishful thinking.

It is a shame that Protestant anti-Catholics deny facts so often.

There were other reasons which should not be forgotten: some left because of the lies of Protestants. Others left because they were so poorly educated in public schools and never learned how to think. People who are poorly catechized, poorly educated, and lied to are ripe for Protestantism.

“Matthew is authoritative because the Words of Christ are recorded in the Gospel.”

No. If that were the case, then this thread could become authoritative by simply posting verses from the Bible. That would make every book ever written by every heretic authoritative if he merely uses Bible verses in some fashion - whether or not they are used properly!

You approach from a false premise.

Are the NT scriptures authoritative because church officials placed them in the canon; or were the NT Scriptures placed in the canon because they were authoritative?

I think you mistook my posting.

Quite possibly.

Sometimes I mistake just why I walked into the room!

Others left because they were so poorly educated in public schools and never learned how to think.

Others stayed because...

... they were properly educated in Catholic schools and never felt the need to learn how to think.

While Catholic doctrine IS 'authoritative' because the MAGISTERIUM says it's so.

And we know Joseph was commanded to not have relations with her until the birth of Christ.

Uh...

Not quite.

Matthew 1:18-25

18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

“While Catholic doctrine IS ‘authoritative’ because the MAGISTERIUM says it’s so.”

Again, how do you know Matthew’s gospel was written by Matthew? How do you know it is inspired?

“Others stayed because...... they were properly educated in Catholic schools and never felt the need to learn how to think.”

No. Catholic schools routinely teach people how to think. U.S. culture does not, however, and sometimes that culture is stronger than a particular Catholic’s education in a Catholic school. I remember talking to a former Protestant pastor at length about this some years ago. He said he encountered some of the same problems among Lutherans under his pastoral care that he later encountered among Catholics: they were not well catechized and didn’t feel the need to become well catechized.

“You’d make a good ELIZA impersonator!”

Strange, I was just thinking you could impersonate this lady: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJWOx_uRkE8

“Could you open the pod bay door now?”

If you remembered to bring your helmet, you could open the pod bay door yourself.
