Both conservative and progressive Catholics will be disappointed in Pope Francis programme of spiritual renewal, doctrinal continuity and emphasis on the poor, a top German cardinal said.
In an interview with the Italian newspaper, Il Foglio, Cardinal Walter Kasper, a theologian and retired president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, said: Many people are enthusiastic about (Pope Francis). He is a true pastor, he has great charm, a direct approach with people.
But he added that many will be disappointed in Francis, claiming that the conservative branch of the Church already feels let down because he doesnt have the intellectual heft of Benedict and then because he abolished the pontifical court something I am grateful for; it was an anachronistic extravagance.
The cardinal predicted the progressive wing would not be happy either because even though the Pope has ushered in a change in style, he will not change the content.
There is continuity in the doctrine between him and Benedict, he said. Pope Francis will not change anything with priestly celibacy, will not open ordinations to women or promote other progressive issues that are not part of Church teaching.

I wouldn’t expect him to appease either side.
Ping!
Good. he’s already disappointing the resident snake handler street corner theologians, expecting him to join them in condemning the Church to Hell. As he should.
Nice Cardinal. Predicts no one will like the Pope. He’s already the Pope, elected by this guys fellow Cardinals, let’s judge him on his actions, not some Cardinal that wanted to give a negative interview.
I don’t think any member of the clergy (Jewish, Catholic, or Protestant-—I don’t really care about the Suicide Bomber Cult) should make any attempt whatsoever to appeal to the progressivik pigs. They take positions that are clearly anti-God.
Pope Francis has already had a measurable positive effect on the individual Parishes.
When Pope Benedict abruptly resigned is was quite troubling and the uncertainty of who his replacement would be only added to it. Our Church had masses twice a day for eight days leading up to the vote.
I don’t know anyone who is unhappy with the Pontiff.
Nyer/salvation/tax-chick/arrogantbustard/Mark may be able to answer your question Conor
It’s his special sympathy for Muslims that really bothers me, particularly the illegal alien ones in Italy.
There are no “progressives”, at least not on the left! They keep returning to the failed policies of the past.
BTW, Thank You Rush for (once again) making something I have been saying for years mainstream!
I think Paul VI can claim credit for that.
That would be some of the poor people he hangs with.
Don’t expect improvement of liturgies under this pope, but you may see it under certain bishops.
BXVI helped ameliorate the problem. JPII was more interested in evangelization. Francis is all about love for the poor.
Straightening out the mess is a long-term project. It will take generations to repair.
Sounds like a libertarian :-)
I hope the Devil is the most disappointed.
I think liturgy is driven at the Diocesan level more than by the Pope. I agree with Jeff Chandler that it doesn’t seem to be an emphasis for Pope Francis. However, he’s been Pope only a few months. He couldn’t have done everything everyone wants in that time period, even if he wanted to!
Here in my little Latin American liturgical backwater, the hermanas charismaticas are taking up lace mantillas; make of that what you will. One of the dear ladies looks just like the Queen of Spain.
He has thus far made two public utterances I found mushy or ecumenical
The good works talk and the Ramadan polemic
He is no JP or Benedict I fear
