Newspaper's online image called 'blasphemous' [Catholics / Lady of Guadalupe]

SANTA FE, N.M. —A newspaper’s recent online design, which depicts a woman who looks like Lady of Guadalupe in a bikini, has drawn controversy from Catholics across the state.

The cartoon woman in The Santa Fe Reporter's "Summer Guide 2013" issue is wearing a yellow bikini, along with a blue cloak that covers the top of her head and nothing else. Behind the woman, there are yellow sun rays. She is sipping from a margarita glass.

The cover design has angered Catholics because of the woman's uncanny resemblance to Our Lady of Guadalupe.

“I think that's very offensive,” said local Catholic David Rodke. "(The paper) seems to be posing her as the Virgin of Guadalupe. That's blasphemous!"

Alexa Schirtzinger, the editor of The Santa Fe Reporter, declined to do an interview. However, Shirtzinger posted a blog in response to the outrage over the image.

"The intent of our Summer Guide cover design was not to insult or denigrate any religion or ethnicity, but rather to incorporate an important part of Santa Fe's culture into an image that also unites other diverse cultures that flourish in our city,” Schirtzinger wrote in the blog.

Resident Terence Lente said the picture may be in poor taste, but there’s no reason to censor it.

“I can see how this could offend many people,” Lente said. “It [snip] people off but at the same time. It’s freedom of speech.”

The Santa Fe Reporter distributes close to 20,0000 copies each week to Albuquerque, Santa Fe and parts of northern New Mexico.

Are you saying that Jesus Christ, the second person of the Holy Trinity is not God?

You are very mistaken.

And Mary was his human mother!

Don't just grumble --- or argue with dwarves --- do something.

Please Go here, "Click to vote," and tell them this is offensive.

Please, only those who love Christ and call Christ's mother "Blessed"--- and give "honor to whom honor is due " --- should FReep this poll. Thank you.

And make prayers of reparation, that this endlessly trivializing, banal, and stupefyingly vulgar culture may be replaced by one which helps us praise God in all things.

I have voted! Thank you. John Grace mentioned the importance of The Chaplet of Divine Mercy in these very bleak days, and although I have prayed it before, I am going back to praying it more fervently. "Argue with dwarves" got a lol out of me, Mrs. Don-o... today's Gospel, as you may recall, was about "pearls before swine." :)

Thanks for the link.

I voted that I find it offensive.

And I’m not even Catholic.

>> Saying that others were also 'blessed' does not make Mary's less so, nor refute hers is more so.<<

Jesus disagreed with the words spoken about Mary and said those who believed were the ones who were blessed.

Luke 11:27And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. 28 But he said, Nay rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

The words spoken to Mary were no different then were spoken to Jael in Judges. In fact, Jael was called blessed above women. Mary was called blessed among women.

Luke 1:28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

Judges 5:24 Blessed above women shall Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite be,

Those words were also spoken of Noah, Moses, and David.

I trust that all of us --- Christians of whatever flavor --- would find it sad, insulting and disappointing if Jael, Noah, Moses and David were trivialized in the media, as well. How about Moses going up Mt. Sinai and bringing down a box of condoms, eh?

I hate the vulgarity of this so-called culture. I hate it, and to the extent of my strength, I resist it.

Jael is one of my sanguinary favorites, and a "type" or forerunner of Mary. This theme of the enmity between the Serpent and the Woman, and the enmity between the seed of the Serpent and the seed of the Woman, is returned to repeatedly from Genesis to Revelation, You do know that "All of Scripture" refers to Christ and the great fact of the coming of the Redeemer, don't you?

Jesus, Mary, the Apostles (12 Apostles, 12 tribes), the Church, are all foreshadowed in the OT.

Thanks be to God!

None of that and nothing in scripture makes the level of veneration to Mary exhibited by the RCC correct or warranted. Its roots are in paganism as is much of what the RCC does and teaches. Those who follow the RCC teaching need to investigate those pagan origins and heed the warnings in scripture.

Genesis 3:20

"And Adam called the name of his wife Eve: because she was the mother of all the living."

But Mary is not Mother of all spiritual believers? Mary obeyed the right Angel too and Eve disobeyed with the wrong angel. Huh? lol!

Thanks for posting that link. Quite an interesting turn of phrase in the piece, saying the woman in the picture has an “uncanny resemblance” to our lady of Guadalupe.

I mean, who are they trying to kid with that?

>And the cowboy looks like a flaming faggot. The artist must have been channeling “Village People”. <

Perhaps it is a self-portrait, given the treatment of the feminine image it mocks.

Are you Catholic?

Nope, though there are things about the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches that I admire (more the EO than the RC, quite frankly).
