"..yeah sure you were Catholic.." Somehow, claiming to be a former Catholics gains some street cred in some circles. Perhaps we could find a few of their names on a parish record somewhere, but aside from some technicality they were never actually Catholic.
What we do know is that many who claim that they left the Church over doctrinal differences know exceedingly little about Church doctrine.
