Herod’s Temple Mount Revealed in Al-Aqsa Mosque Restoration

Wooden beams from the time of Herod’s Temple Mount in secondary use in the Al-Aqsa Mosque

What happened to Jerusalem’s Temple Mount when the Romans destroyed Herod’s Temple in 70 C.E.? There is no report of any building left on the Temple Mount by the time the Muslims erected the iconic Dome of the Rock and the gray-domed Al-Aqsa Mosque in the late seventh and early eighth centuries.

Did the wooden beams from Herod’s Temple Mount survive? In the May/June 2013 issue of Biblical Archaeology Review, Peretz Reuven studies beams removed from the Al-Aqsa Mosque to reveal the storied history of Jerusalem’s Temple Mount.

How did wooden beams from the era of Herod’s Temple Mount end up being used as tie beams and bond timbers in the Al-Aqsa Mosque?

They stole the beams. However, they will never steal the CORNERSTONE.

muslims seem to have a history of destroying wherever they go then placing a mosque over it to show their conquest. Haga Sofia, the Temple Mount, and now the WTC Victory mosque (which Bloomy & Gov Krispy Kreme seem to support) are other examples. I read somewhere that there is a mosque in Alexandria Egypt that was being repaired and they found what was believed to be the tomb of Alexander the Great.

That mosque is a tumor. Eventually it’ll be removed.

Damn thieves. From time immemorial.

The ignorant savages have never been anything but a plague on the world, desecrating anything truly holy every chance they get. They live in squalor and savagery, always angry at the rest of the world for their own eternal short comings.

Muslims and early Christians are two sides of the same coin in how they regard religious sites.

Early Christians? Maybe, however muslims are still doing this. Look at the 1000 year old Buddha carving in the mountains of Kashmir. A huge archeological loss. It wasn't early Christians destroying that.

It's always funny when muslim apologists need to reach back to the inquisition and further to make their comparisons.

This was a common practice for the Catholic Church as recent as a few hundred years ago. The way they evangelized was to slowly take over religious sites of other faiths. Dig under any older Cathedral and you’re likely to find a more ancient religious site. Muslims are just more aggressive, that’s all.

Since the clearing and site prep were probably done by illiterate slaves under the supervision of free underlings, it is unlikely that any "record" would have been kept. Anything useful would have been saved, and what was useless discarded. But I'm sure none of it went into a ledger.

Give them a break — they do not have the capacity to make their own beams.

They didn’t build a mosque over Hagia Sophia. Hagia Sophia was a cathedral that the Moslems made into a mosque and that was later made into a museum. The original building is still there in Istanbul. I have been there and seen it.

My FRiend the story goes both ways.

Beneath the Basilica of San Clemente in Rome they found a 2nd century mithraeum—a temple to the god Mithras.

But the mithraeum itself was a converted 1st century Christian House Church, probably owned by Flavius Clemens, who was executed for “atheism” and Jewish customs.

I can’t prove it was given to the Mithraists specifically to paganize the formerly Christian site, but I wouldn’t put it past them either.

I have been there also, you’re right they did convert the cathedral, it’s what they do. There is no freedom of religion in the muslim world.
