The original scripture for love your neighbor is found in Leviticus 19:18: “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.”

Self-Defense is Biblical:

“The man wanted to justify (his lack of love for some kinds of people), so he asked, “Which neighbors?” “

I wonder about the accuracy of that translation. Here is a collection of translations;

http://www.blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?b=Luk&c=10&t=NASB#vrsn/29

“Which neighbors” has a different meaning than “who is my neighbor”. The man who had fallen among thieves was the example of who was the neighbor. The one who helped was the one who was loving a neighbor;

“Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers’ hands?” And he said, “The one who showed mercy toward him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do the same.”

“Mercy” is an interesting word to use in this context. We usually think of mercy as something to be extended to those who have done wrong, not to those who have had wrong done to them.

It was a “hard saying” when Jesus said it in real life, too :-).

Christians understand that we cannot live by the law. We all fail. We live by grace. But more important, one has to remember the Golden Rule is the SECOND rule. The FIRST rule is to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind. When a person's actions to the second rule violates the first rule, then it's time to reexamine one's response. We are to love one another. But we're also commanded by God to shun evil and speak the truth lovingly. A more complete summation of the Golden Rule can be found in the books of Timothy:

Today most of us don't get offended when someone uses the Lord's name in vain because we want to show them how "loving" we are. But they are violating the 1st commandment for which we are to warned them. Instead, we keep our mouths shut. We're more willing to keep the second rule in violation of the first rule. After all, it's just God were offending and He's forgiving-right?
