I spent a lot of time yesterday sorting out my feelings about Gosnell and his conviction, as well as the way some extreme pro-life people are talking about him. Thanks to a few respected colleagues who took some time with me to discuss in private, I think Ive worked out the three major feelings I have. I suspect most of my readers will agree with the first two, but have questions about the third:
1 Im glad limited justice has been served. 2 Im glad hes going to prison. 3 Yet, I dont want Gosnell to go to Hell. Id rather spend time with him in Heaven.
Before you roll your eyes and move on, please give me the chance to explain why I dont think any of those statements makes me a weak pro-lifer.
1. Im glad limited justice has been served.
I do not think there is anything wrong with wanting justice done. I felt a little bit good watching Gosnell walk to the police van after the trial, because I felt like justice was done. It would have been terrible if he had walked on all the charges!
The justice served Gosnell so far is limited, because ultimate justice wont be served until judgement day. Either Gosnell will throw himself at the mercy of Jesus while in prison, (and in that case, Jesus paid the penalty for his sins on the cross) or Gosnell will bear the penalty for his own sins when he meets his Maker.
I realize that some people feel like prison is too good for Gosnell, and thus justice wont really be done, even on Earth. Frankly, theres a part of me that agrees. Knowing about some of the things Gosnell did in his clinic causes me to think that this guy is probably one of the most evil men in the country. There is a cruel coldness to what Gosnell did to babies and his patients that could have come from a horror movie plot. Perhaps Gosnell does deserve worse than an American prison.Yet
2. Im glad hes going to prison.
By this, I mean Im glad we dont live in a country that would carry out a quick execution on this man. Id rather he be in prison. Why? Because of my third statement, that I mean with all my heart:
3. I dont want Gosnell to go to Hell. Id rather spend time with him in Heaven.
I would love to see Gosnell convert before he dies. So I hope for the best for his soul, while hoping that justice is done on Earth, which I dont think is mutually exclusive.
My friend Abby Johnson, who used to work at a Planned Parenthood abortion facility before becoming a pro-life advocate, sees the worst from the pro-life movement on her Facebook page. I dont know why she attracts the meanest people in our movement, but she does. Its saddened me over and over to see that this person whos relatively new to our movement because she came from the other side gets metaphorically hit in the face with buckets of ice water on a daily basis from the people who comment on her status updates.
Abby posted a few statements responding to the extreme comments people were writing on her page about Gosnell, and followed those up with a blog post explaining her feelings in greater detail. It basically comes down to this: she doesnt feel like shes better than Gosnell.
Then Abby writes,
So when someone talks about Gosnell and says things like, murderers and people like him dont deserve to breathe the same air as I do, or I hope he burns in hell, it hurts a little. Because that was me. But I am still here breathing that same air and trying to spend my life righting my wrongs. And its not just me. I know they hurt others like me, as well. People who have left the abortion industry and will work every day to recover from their sins. People who are still in the industry and think they will be shunned by the pro-life movement maybe they would reach out to us if they knew we would accept them. I am always terrified that clinic workers will see some of the words from pro-lifers. I have been told by several former workers that they will NEVER come forward with their stories because they are so scared of how they will be treated by us by US the supposed Christian movement. Their fears are real AND legitimate.
I dont think writing that I HOPE GOSNELL BURNS IN HELL! is a virtuous response for a Christian. I know a lot of people are going to Hell. But Id rather nobody does. Id rather everybody converts first, and that includes evil men like Kermit Gosnell. I think God agrees with this sentiment:
The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
~ 2 Peter 3:9 (ESV)
If Gosnell contacted me and asked me to visit him in prison, I would go. And I would unashamedly tell him the Good News that Christ died and conquered sin, and offers atonement to all who will accept that gift, including sinners like him and me.
And I would be ecstatic if Gosnell surrendered to Christ before dying in prison.
I would like to hang out with a converted Gosnell in Heaven for some of the same reasons I want to hang out with Paul in Heaven. It would be more evidence of how amazing Gods grace actually is.

I know Gosnell did horrific things, and I know that the pro-life movement has talked about Gosnell a lot in order to get our society thinking about the things he did, in hopes that we can find some common ground and ultimately talk about whether there are any morally relevant differences between what Gosnell did to viable babies outside of the womb, and what we do to thousands of non-viable babies inside the womb every day.
But now that justice has been served, I think this is a moment where we need to encourage our people to have a heart like Christ does. My pragmatic reason for that is this is one of those news stories that puts abortion to the front, which is rare right now. People are watching what pro-lifers say about this. That reason alone I think is sufficient for us to act as Christ-like as possible. My principled reason is that we are supposed to have a heart like Christ does, regardless of whether it gains us any public traction.
If he went to Hell, he’d give the place a bad name. Frankly, I don’t want to run into him. (Not that I think I’m going to heaven. I suspect St. Peter will flip through the book murmuring “Gen...Gen...no. I don’t see it.)
I just think there is nothing healthier for our own souls than to sincerely pray that bad people truly find God before their final judgement.
A) I’m glad he was convicted.
B) He should be executed.
C) People’s eternal destination is above my pay grade.
D) I understand why a lot of pro-lifers are often unhappy with Abby Johnson.
I, too, pray for him and for his salvation.
Loving our enemies - and, for me, the struggle to do so - is a powerful witness to the truth that God is Love.
Reading the article and your post made me change my mind, too. Thanks.
Excellent comment.

I agree. I pray that Obama will see the light and the error of Islam and convert to real not BLT Christianity all the time. It’s not my desire to see him harmed or die but rather that he change his ways and be saved. Even though he is a thorn in our side daily I think of Paul meeting Jesus on the road to Damascus and how he changed from hunting down Christians and later became the 5th apostle writing many of the books of the New Testament.
I don't judge his soul. I'll leave that to God. I don't hate. And, while I'm not sure this is best, I don't care what happens to him or his soul. I might have to contemplate further. But I do not know much about the case.
Because he'd make the rest of the occupants look good by comparison?
I don’t want anyone to go to hell. I pray daily for Obama to be saved - will pray the same for Gosnell. Heaven rejoices when a sinner repents (TRULY repents that is - not the Bill Clinton wave-a-huge-Bible-around-and-say-sorry kind of repentance) - we should also.
I too hope he finds our Lord before he dies. I believe that God died for all our sins. Gosnells sins seperate him from a Holy God just as my sins do.
I will be praying for his salvation.
Jesus came so that NONE should perish.
Bernard Nathanson, the founder of NARAL, was responsible for the deaths of over 75,000 unborn children, including his own.
Thanks to the prayers of pro-lifers, he converted to Christianity, repented, and became a valiant spokesman for the unborn before his death.
I know I’ll see him in Heaven.
--Fanny Crosby, 1875
Gosnell’s final destination is beyond my analysis.
He should be executed. I consider myself a civilized person, so I won’t suggest that the manner of his deserved execution be as heinous as the methods he used, a simple double tap will do. But put him down like a sick animal, which he is.
Anyone taken note of the fact that the people who enabled this to go on and on and on are all free & clear?
For us to proclaim someone to proclaim someone too evil for salvation is to put ourselves above Jesus.
Now *THAT* was the statement of a true Christian.
