Elder Bruce R. McConkie’s Son Shares His Father’s Legacy [Lds leader taught controversial teachings]
LDS Church News ^ | April 24, 2013 | R. Scott Lloyd

Posted on 05/06/2013 10:17:36 AM PDT by Colofornian

...Bruce R. McConkie was a boy growing up in Monticello, Utah...

...the son grew to be a member of the Quorum of the Twelve from 1972 until his death in 1985, well respected and remembered for his written and spoken discourses in which he taught the doctrines of the gospel with clarity and power.

The above...was recounted by Elder McConkie’s son Joseph Fielding McConkie on April 11 in an address in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square in Salt Lake City for the monthly Men and Women of Faith Lecture Series sponsored by the Church History Library. His topic was “Bruce R. McConkie: A Special Witness.”

SNIP

“At his funeral, then Elder Boyd K. Packer [of the Quorum of the Twelve] said, ‘If ever there was a man who was raised up unto a very purpose, if ever a man was prepared against a certain day and need, it was Bruce R. McConkie."

SNIP

“A valid and binding testimony of Christ grows out of a sound understanding of the Restoration. You cannot get to Gethsemane without going through the Sacred Grove.”

SNIP

Brother McConkie said his father drew freely from what became known as the Joseph Smith Translation in his own writings, including Mormon Doctrine, Doctrinal New Testament Commentary, and the six-volume work beginning with The Promised Messiah and concluding with The Millennial Messiah.

He recalled his father’s address at a 1979 BYU symposium on the Doctrine and Covenants in which he said, “The test of discipleship is how totally and completely and fully we believe the word that was revealed through Joseph Smith and how effectively we echo or proclaim that word to the world.”

“It was the doctrine upon which Dad was raised,” Brother McConkie commented. “It was the doctrine on which he raised his own children.”

The doctrine of my Church is contained in the Scriptures.

Then just HOW do you explain all the stuff that happens in your beloved Temples?

Ain't NONE of that ritual found in your 'scriptures'.

You will know them by their fruit.

Yep; we WILL know FALSE PROPHETS by their fruit!

(Look it up in your 'scriptures'.)

Fact remains that Jesus Christ is our Savior, Lord, Redeemer and Soon-Coming King. He is the Head of the Church.

Who; evidently; needs a LOT of help from Joseph Smith! (Whom you have IGNORED in reply #19)

Since you are hell bent on trying to ...

Be confused no longer.

Maybe this LDS 'scripture' ain't working the right way!

The

DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS

OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS

SECTION 71

Revelation given to Joseph Smith the Prophet and Sidney Rigdon, at Hiram, Ohio, December 1, 1831. HC 1: 238–239. The Prophet had continued to translate the Bible with Sidney Rigdon as his scribe until this revelation was received, at which time it was temporarily laid aside so as to enable them to fulfill the instruction given herein. The brethren were to go forth to preach in order to allay the unfriendly feelings that had developed against the Church as a result of the publication of some newspaper articles by Ezra Booth, who had apostatized.

1–4, Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon are sent forth to proclaim the gospel; 5–11, Enemies of the saints shall be confounded.

1 Behold, thus saith the Lord unto you my servants Joseph Smith, Jun., and Sidney Rigdon, that the time has verily come that it is necessary and expedient in me that you should open your mouths in proclaiming my gospel, the things of the kingdom, expounding the mysteries thereof out of the scriptures, according to that portion of Spirit and power which shall be given unto you, even as I will.

2 Verily I say unto you, proclaim unto the world in the regions round about, and in the church also, for the space of a season, even until it shall be made known unto you.

3 Verily this is a mission for a season, which I give unto you.

4 Wherefore, labor ye in my vineyard. Call upon the inhabitants of the earth, and bear record, and prepare the way for the commandments and revelations which are to come.

5 Now, behold this is wisdom; whoso readeth, let him understand and receive also;

6 For unto him that receiveth it shall be given more abundantly, even power.

7 Wherefore, confound your enemies; call upon them to meet you both in public and in private; and inasmuch as ye are faithful their shame shall be made manifest.

8 Wherefore, let them bring forth their strong reasons against the Lord.

9 Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you—there is no weapon that is formed against you shall prosper;

10 And if any man lift his voice against you he shall be confounded in mine own due time.

11 Wherefore, keep my commandments; they are true and faithful. Even so. Amen.

LDS 'scripture'             versus                                  LIES told by non-MORMON scholars

Figure Joseph Smith Explanation[52] Explanation by non-Mormon and Mormon Egyptologists (quotes are from Deveria)[25][43][53]
1 Kolob, signifying the first creation, nearest to the celestial, or the residence of God. First in government, the last pertaining to the measurement of time. The measurement according to celestial time, which celestial time signifies one day to a cubit. One day in Kolob is equal to a thousand years according to the measurement of this earth, which is called by the Egyptians Jah-oh-eh. "The spirit of the four elements (according to Champollion), or rather of the four winds, or the four cardinal points; the soul of the terrestrial world. This god is always represented with four rams' heads, and his image has certainly been altered here. — They have also evidently made a very clumsy attempt at copying the double human head of the god figured above, fig. 2, instead of the four rams' heads. The word Jah-oh-eh has nothing Egyptian in it; it resembles the Hebrew word [redacted] badly transcribed." (emphasis in original) The name hieroglyph above the central figure is Chnm-Re, the Egyptian "First Creator" god who organized everything out of the primordial chaos.

Confusing to me but you're in charge.

Just HOW did the 'first' LDS scriptures come to be???

"Now the way he translated was he put the urim and thummim into his hat and Darkned his Eyes than he would take a sentance and it would apper in Brite Roman Letters. Then he would tell the writer and he would write it. Then that would go away the next sentance would Come and so on. But if it was not Spelt rite it would not go away till it was rite, so we see it was marvelous. Thus was the hol [whole] translated."
---Joseph Knight's journal.

"In writing for your father I frequently wrote day after day, often sitting at the table close by him, he sitting with his face buried in his hat, with the stone in it, and dictating hour after hour with nothing between us."
(History of the RLDS Church, 8 vols.
(Independence, Missouri: Herald House,1951),
"Last Testimony of Sister Emma [Smith Bidamon]," 3:356.

"I, as well as all of my father's family, Smith's wife, Oliver Cowdery and Martin Harris, were present during the translation. . . . He [Joseph Smith] did not use the plates in translation."
---(David Whitmer,
as published in the "Kansas City Journal," June 5, 1881,
and reprinted in the RLDS "Journal of History", vol. 8, (1910), pp. 299-300.

In an 1885 interview, Zenas H. Gurley, then the editor of the RLDS Saints Herald, asked Whitmer if Joseph had used his "Peep stone" to do the translation. Whitmer replied:

"... he used a stone called a "Seers stone," the "Interpreters" having been taken away from him because of transgression. The "Interpreters" were taken from Joseph after he allowed Martin Harris to carry away the 116 pages of Ms [manuscript] of the Book of Mormon as a punishment, but he was allowed to go on and translate by use of a "Seers stone" which he had, and which he placed in a hat into which he buried his face, stating to me and others that the original character appeared upon parchment and under it the translation in English."

"Martin Harris related an incident that occurred during the time that he wrote that portion of the translation of the Book of Mormon which he was favored to write direct from the mouth of the Prophet Joseph Smith. He said that the Prophet possessed a seer stone, by which he was enabled to translate as well as from the Urim and Thummim, and for convenience he then used the seer stone, Martin explained the translation as follows: By aid of the seer stone, sentences would appear and were read by the Prophet and written by Martin and when finished he would say 'Written,' and if correctly written that sentence would disappear and another appear in its place, but if not written correctly it remained until corrected, so that the translation was just as it was engraven on the plates, precisely in the language then used."
(Edward Stevenson, "One of the Three Witnesses,"
reprinted from Deseret News, 30 Nov. 1881
in Millennial Star, 44 (6 Feb. 1882): 86-87.)

In 1879, Michael Morse, Emma Smith's brother-in-law, stated:

"When Joseph was translating the Book of Mormon [I] had occasion more than once to go into his immediate presence, and saw him engaged at his work of translation. The mode of procedure consisted in Joseph's placing the Seer Stone in the crown of a hat, then putting his face into the hat, so as to entirely cover his face, resting his elbows upon his knees, and then dictating word after word, while the scribes Emma, John Whitmer, O. Cowdery, or some other wrote it down."
(W.W. Blair interview with Michael Morse,
Saints Herald, vol. 26, no. 12
June 15, 1879,  pp. 190-91.)

Joseph Smith's brother William also testified to the "face in the hat" version:

"The manner in which this was done was by looking into the Urim and Thummim, which was placed in a hat to exclude the light, (the plates lying near by covered up), and reading off the translation, which appeared in the stone by the power of God"
("A New Witness for Christ in America,"
Francis W. Kirkham, 2:417.)

"The manner in which he pretended to read and interpret was the same manner as when he looked for the money-diggers, with the stone in his hat, while the book of plates were at the same time hid in the woods."
---Isaac Hale (Emma Smith's father's) affidavit, 1834.

I am getting used to this kind of nonsense. The pioneers of my Church were persecuted and driven out of every place they called home - including women and children - until they finally reached the Salt Lake valley. All of their belongings had been stolen and many had died. What was their great offense? Religion - in a country where freedom of religion is supposed to be promised in the U.S. Constitution, a document that my Church holds dear.

In post 42, how could I have forgotten the persecution card? When you can't answer with substance, try for pity.

Why is it that other alternative religious orders (Amish, Mennonites, Shakers, etc.) could settle in the same areas and not have such problems with their neighbors? It might have something to do with not starting phony banks which defrauded citizens or physically destroying newspapers which printed critical stories of the religion (criticisms which historians have proven were true). These events forced the Mormons out of Ohio and Illinois, respectively. Reading non-Mormon histories of the time and you're struck by the similarity of the behavior of Mormons of the 1800s and Muslims today. When either achieve a significant minority status in an area, they cease being good neighbors. (Certainly, today's Mormons are not as ill-behaved as their ancestors.)

Some people still hold the same ill-conceived opinions about me and my Church.

You keep claiming that but you never disprove anything. Could that be because these "opinions" are based on LDS material, itself? To refute the "opinions", you'll find yourself arguing against your own authorities.

Fact remains that Jesus Christ is our the Savior, Lord, Redeemer and Soon-Coming King. He is the Head of the true and universal Church which doesn't include any of the false teaching of Joseph Smith .

Fixed it for you.

“When the Prophet speaks, the debate is over”
(Ensign, Nov. 1978)
lds.org

“There is no salvation without accepting Joseph Smith. If Joseph Smith was verily a prophet, and if he told the truth, no man can reject that testimony without incurring the most dreadful consequences, for he cannot enter the kingdom of God” - Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 1, p.190

“If we get our salvation, we shall have to pass by Joseph Smith; if we enter our glory, it will be through the authority he has received. We cannot get around him.” -1988 Melchizedek Priesthood Study Guide, p. 142, Apostle George Q. Cannon

“He that confesseth not that Jesus has come in the flesh and sent Joseph Smith with the fullness of the Gospel to this generation, is not of God, but is anti-christ.” -Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 9, p.312

Ezra Taft Benson: “The Living Prophet, is more vital to us than the Standard Works [Bible, Book of Mormon, etc.].
The living Prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet [an Old Testament Prophet]”
“Keep your eye on the President of the Church. If he ever tells you to do anything, and it is wrong, and you do it, the Lord will bless you for it” (Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophets, BYU Devotional, Feb 26, 1980, p.3,6).

Joseph Fielding Smith declared that at every General Conference of the church, the speakers are giving forth scripture that is equal to anything in the Bible or Book of Mormon. (undated)

” Guess what? I am getting used to this kind of nonsense.”

I guess you would have to be pretty used to your nonsense to repeat it so blatantly. Other than yourself, who do you think you’re fooling? I think we can all safely read what your Prophets and Apostles said about their own writings and discourses.

“The pioneers of my Church were persecuted and driven out of every place they called home -”

I’d rather lose my home than get castrated by a Mormon Bishop who wanted my fiance as his 4th wife:

So when do you plan to join the FLDS so you don’t go to hell for violating Brigham Young’s Discourse/Scripture?

Walked around Temple Square tonight - gorgeous grounds with tulips and pansies - how peaceful and lovely. There were a few anti Mormons there who confronted me with tracts. I said Jesus Christ is my Savior and Advocate with the Father and the guy said something about how I think my Church will save me to which I said, “Jesus Christ is the Head of my Church.” It was a lovely evening.

Joh 4:21-24 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. (22) Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. (23) But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. (24) God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

The tulips and pansies arrayed about the church of Satan won’t provide a legitimate excuse for you when you stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

So, tell me again, when you plan to convert to the FLDS so the curse of your Prophet won’t fall on you?

Yes except the Jesus Christ isn't the head of your Church. That has been made clear time and time with in the very doctrine and scripture you covet. The name on a building does not necessarily identify what is with in.

And the Japanese have some lovely gardens as well...

Yes, Jesus Christ is the Head of my Church. His Blessed Name appears in the title of my Church. And more importantly He is my Advocate with the Father. And the Holy Ghost is my Best Friend. Have a great day.

Jesus is not the head of any Polytheistic church. You can say 2+2=5 all day long, but it will never make the answer anything but 4 in reality.

Study more, realize that a “brother of Satan, separate deity part of a polytheistic group, born from a physical act between Mary and a human “god”, who is not full adequate for salvation” character named “jesus christ” ids not the true I am, the living word made flesh.

In the end simple "good feelings" is not enough to know Christ. There are very specific facts in evidence that define who he is.

And who he isn't...

His Blessed Name appears in the title of my Church.

So according to this logic there's nothing wrong with the Church of Jesus Christ - Christian. Right? I mean the "Blessed Name" is in the title. Never mind that it a white supremacy church. Never mind that it was founded by leaders of the Ku Klux Klan. Never mind that it has ties to domestic terrorists. All is good because the name Jesus Christ appears in the title. Right?

A church like this one or yours cannot gloss over abominable doctrine by adding the name Jesus Christ. To argue that it would is just foolishness.
