car accidents, heart surgery, out of control infections, hospitalized for pneumonia, explosions, being shot at, etc)..How are ya, Lucky?

Your post made me think of the time that Cale Yarborough ( I think it was) got asked by a reporter if Richard Petty was really that good. He said, "Hell no, he just got lucky 200 times!"

Just reminded of years a go when somebody posted about a three legged, one eyed dog with his ears torn off and and a broken tail or something. His name was Lucky. Like a dumbass, I looked him for him every time I went out walking or driving. Then it hit me (not the dog). Oh, ...wait....

I am needing to gather information for a paper for my Philosophy course. The information needs to be gathered from other people's thoughts. Could you help me? - What is ultimate reality to you? God? Matter? An impersonal force? Something else? - Is truth absolute or relative? - Are moral values absolute or relative? - Let's go back to ultimate reality. Do you believe in God? If so, why? If not, why not?

Ultimate reality transcends my perceptions or understanding of it. That is, my existence, my perceptions, and my understanding are all part of ultimate reality, just not the whole of it.

Truth is absolute or relative depending on one's definition of it. Truth exists only in terms of propositional statements about reality that may be confirmed or refuted. What may be true one day may not be true another day. The statement, "There is no such thing as air travel by means of heavier-than-air craft," was absolutely true 150 years ago. It is no longer true. A statement may be absolutely true by definition: An element exists as a solid, a liquid, a gas, or as plasma.

Moral values may be either absolute or relative depending on their source. If a moral value is a description of a societally accepted or proscribed behavior at some point in that society's history, it may change as that society changes so that what was once accepted as correct and proper and moral behavior is later no longer so accepted and vice versa. Some moral values are absolute by definition such as "We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights..." Given the existence of such a Creator and the self-evidence of these truths, they continue as absolute moral values as long as the source continues. If the source is a deity whose existence is uncaused then the moral values are as permanent as the existence of that deity--of course, if that deity is defined as capable of modifying its expectations and its own behavior with respect to its creation, then that moral value dependent on the deity is absolute only as long as the deity continues to promote it.

I believe in God because it's easier to explain the existence of evil and the sense of moral oughtness in a theistic, non-deterministic universe than to explain anything at all in our personal experience in terms of a deterministic universe, either theological or naturalistic determinism.

The fact that religion and philosophy are distinct does not mean that they are entirely separate.

You *may* be entirely too young to be treading in these waters. Since some correspondents are nicer than others, and should you ever find any in YOUR mail bag, you should immediately flush out your head with whatever caustic is closest to hand.

The First Law of Philosophy: For every philosopher, there exists an equal and opposite philosopher.

The Second Law of Philosophy: They're both wrong.

“The fact that religion and philosophy are distinct does not mean that they are entirely separate.”

The duality. The ying and yang. The scotch and water.

What is ultimate reality to you?

Texas

Is truth absolute or relative?

Absolute and found predominantly in Texas

Are moral values absolute or relative?

That’s a stupid question.

Let’s go back to ultimate reality. Do you believe in God? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes.
If there were no God, explain Texas.

Yeah. You can’t.
