I need help with a class assignment -- answering some Philosophy questions.

Posted on 04/22/2013 10:42:44 AM PDT by kitchen-cook

I am needing to gather information for a paper for my Philosophy course. The information needs to be gathered from other people's thoughts. Could you help me? - What is ultimate reality to you? God? Matter? An impersonal force? Something else? - Is truth absolute or relative? - Are moral values absolute or relative? - Let's go back to ultimate reality. Do you believe in God? If so, why? If not, why not?

Right. I have asked them to myself, and I feel certain of where I stand in them. If you’d like to hear my thoughts on the matter I can tell you. I feel that they are questions that everyone should be asking themselves.

Got to get one of those switch-spoons. There’s shortcake out there and it needs to be dealt with.

It’s simple history. There is more than enough historical evidence that Julius Caesar was a Roman General, and that Columbus sailed the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. The same level of historical facts also relate to Jesus of Nazareth, whom even his enemies acknowledge was that he was put to death for claiming to be God Himself. It is up to each individual to examine the historical record and decide for himself if Jesus is God, or else he’s a liar or a lunatic.

I am needing to gather information for a paper for my Philosophy course. The information needs to be gathered from other people's thoughts.

Q1: Could you help me?

A1: Perhaps.

Q2: What is ultimate reality to you?

A2: I am.

Q3: God?

A3: Because He is, I am.

Q4: Matter?

A4: Because He is, matter is.

Q5: An impersonal force?

A5: Because He is, impersonal forces exist.

Q6: Something else?

A6: No. "No" is impersonal.

Q7: Is truth absolute or relative?

A7: Absolute truths are absolute.

- Relative truths must refer to an absolute.
- To say, "Everything is relative" would be an absolute. Therefore that is absolutely false.
- To say, "Nothing is relative" would be an absolute. Therefore that is absolutely false.
- To say, "Some things are relative" is an absolute. Therefore it is absolutely true, as well as truly relative to the previous posits, which are absolutely false.

Q8: Are moral values absolute or relative?

A8: Relative to what?

Let's go back to ultimate reality.

Q9: Do you believe in God?

A9: Affirmative.

Q10: If so, why?

A10: He asked me to believe in Him, and I complied by persistently committing absolute trust in Him, as He presented Himself through His Spoken and Written Word. Now He is "in me," entwined with the "me" so He and I are in union (separate, but intimate). I am convinced, absolutely that He is, absolutely and ultimately, Real.

Q11: If not, why not?

A11: He asked me to believe in Him, and for a time, I decided not to commit trust in His proposition, as presented through His Spoken and Written Word. Therefore He would not enter and change me. It was my choice, then, and many times. But He continued to work on me from without.

Apparently, He saw some promise in His efforts, and continued to seek my presence in His realm of truth and life. He did not give up on me, as He has on others (through foreknowledge, AFIK) who firmly refused His proposition, a transaction offered both spoken and in writing.

==========

My question to you is:

What think you of The Christ?

Please answer this, publicly if you would.

===========

"Jesus saith unto him, 'I am The Way, The Truth, and The Life. No man cometh unto The Father but by Me.' " (John 14:6)(AV, but with my capitalization for Personification, and extra punctuation for clarity.)

Sounds like an absolute to me. What about you?

---------------------------------

"Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ" (Colossians 2:8 AV)

"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil" (Proverbs 3:5-7 AV)

No, it is an acceptable answer.

Acting in total contravention to years of experience and my normally better judgement, I am going to give you a relatively serious answer to your question, bearing in the mind that I'm capable of being serious only under the greatest duress.

We, and everything we percieve, are nothing more than fractal holograms generated by conceptual thought. For the purposes of our feeble understanding, that thought is The Mind of God. That thought is knowable and describable by virtue of its fractal regularity. It is also immutable by virtue of its divine origin.

Further elucidation on my part will cost you. The schedule of rates and fees can be found on my personal page.

Ha, the very premise admits the existence of God.

God is the supreme being. If we can conceive of the concept then surely it must exist in reality otherwise it wouldn’t be supreme, by definition a supreme being is superior to human reason and imagination.

So we are existing perhaps in a slury of sustenance, until we die, thinking of this in our minds, but not actually physically experiencing this? Sounds more and more like The Matrix.

As a philosophy major, my best suggestion to you is to have a backup plan.

It is a poorly rendered version of Augustine’s proof.

Excelllent post! Thank you for your response! I firmly believe that Jesus is the Christ. He is my Savior, and He dwells within me.
Your argument for absolute truth is great and very clear.
As I explained in another post. . . . I have asked these questions for this assignment in hopes of hearing the “other side of the story.” I am a Christian, but I am willing to listen to the “other side” (i.e. an atheist or skeptic) and am really needing to hear that for my paper. I am really thankful that Christians are taking such a firm stand for what they believe. I am beginning to wonder if the atheists and skeptics reading this are not willing to stand for what they ‘believe.’
