I don't think it ever really jumped the shark (in spite of the episode of that name). I didn't really like Robert Patrick's character at first, but he grows on you, and by the episode where he sprinkles his child's ashes into the sea, you get a lot of sympathy for him.

Certainly as the show was winding down, the cast and crew had a lot of lighter moments, and the season nine episode with Burt Reynolds is truly a classic.

The last episode (two parter) was pretty hokey, but the final scene was, IMHO, one of the best closing scenes of any show. Ever.

Once it became a soap opera, always centered around the cigarette-smoking man, it was unwatchable. The circus retirement community was a classic.
