The Papacy - ostentious, elaborate ceremonies, elaborate dress.
Jesus Christ - humility, simple clothes (note purple robe supplied by Romans upon trial), had no home of his own, traveled by foot, wore sandles, plain robe.
St. Francis of Assissi - encouraged the priests that followed him to deny oneself the luxuries that the were accustomed in their families that they grown up in. (Priests did not come from the peasants).
Pope Francis is advocating the Papacy to be like St. Francis of Assisi. Not celebrities.
St Francis was adamant that, while he and his friars would live in poverty, everything that pertained to God in the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was to be of great beauty, for God is Beauty and Truth.
Yes, we should be humble, and help the poor in their need, but even the poor should have a beautiful church. There should be some beauty, some ceremony, in the lives of the poor. The Church provides this. What could be more beautiful than the Body of Christ? The Church could sell everything it has and give it to the poor, and there will still be profound poverty in the world. We will always have the poor.
