Vice President Joe Biden attended mass and received communion on Sunday at St. Patricks Cathedral in New York where the mass was celebrated by Cardinal Timothy Dolan.
At a time when the administration is being sued by Dolan and the Catholic Bishops Conference over the Obama health care provision on birth control, the meeting was seen as an attempt to create a new dialogue.
An Irish American Catholic, Biden receiving communion was also seen as significant. Dolans predecessor Cardinal Edward Egan refused to give communion to those who differed with the church on the abortion issue.
Biden says he is pro-life but will not seek to impose his views on others.
Biden met with Cardinal Dolan after the mass for coffee but what they discussed was not made public.
Bidens latest move comes at a time when the Obama administration appears to be using the VP in a new outreach to American Catholics.
Biden represented the administration at the swearing in of Pope Francis in Rome where he again received communion. He was also inaugurated into the Irish America Hall of Fame last week, also in New York, attended by many leading Irish American Catholics.
Meanwhile, Dolan revealed that he had many stories to tell about the papal conclave.
"You know I just got back from three historic weeks in Rome, and you better get used to hearing a lot of stories about those three weeks," Dolan said.
"It was quite an experience, to hear the first-hand stories of how they chose the pope and special inside information we got, it was truly a delight," said a woman who attended the Mass.
Palm Sunday is among the most significant of the Catholic holy days and begins Holy Week which ends with Easter Sunday.

Biden, this half baked, pro abortion political hack never should have been able to receive communion. Dolan missed a golden oppurtunity to make a statement.
I would not have thought Cardinal Dolan would do that. This is very disappointing.
power corrupts absolutely
Maybe Biden received from an EM instead of directly from Cardinal Dolan ... the article doesn't specify.
As he always will. Witness his pathetic performance in addressing the convention. He's a wise-cracking, Democrat cave-in artist. A clerical O'Reilly.
Very disappointing, indeed. Meet any time for discussion, yes. There is always hope of repentance and reconciliation.
But, offer him Communion when he has failed to repent of a public mortal sin of the most vicious kind, no.
No better than McCain-style “reaching across the aisle,” i.e., giving in to your opponent, although you know he is horribly wrong.
Who is the bigger hypocrite, Joe or the Cardinal?
Whoever Biden received Communion from, Dolan’s policy of defying Canon Law is well-publicized.
This was a pre-arranged meeting for coffee as well as Mass. Dolan had the opportunity and obligation to tell Biden not to receive Communion.
The basic fact is glaring: Dolan believes that being a Cardinal puts him above Canon Law and the divine law which is expressed in Canon Law: It is a mortal sin to give Communion to a person who obstinately persists in a situation of manifest grave sin. http://tinyurl.com/canon915
The Cardinal. It is a much greater sin to pretend to be a Cardinal than to pretend to be a Catholic.
I’m not Catholic, but as a Christian, I dearly hope that the Roman Catholic faith will make a defiant stand regarding this issue and start refusing to minister to willful sinners who commit and support such grievous acts.
That differs how? Core beliefs should not be subject to wriggle room or loopholes. Backsliding is backsliding and it destroys credibility.
Sure, and John Breckenridge was "personally" anti-slavery but opted not to impose his views on others.
You can fool some of the people some of the time, or all of the people all of the time, but you can’t fool God.
The media has done a great job falely presenting Cardinal Dolan as a traditional Catholic. They know they have a very useful puppet.Cardinal Dolan is a liberal Democrat, who will do almost anything to bolster his legacy with liberal press. Thank goodness Cardinal Dolan is not leading the pro-life movement.I firmly hope and pray that some day he sees the media and Obama for what they are.
Our world has no moral compass.
We have no functioning constitution and it would seem the Catholic Church has no rules to uphold.
When the winds of human desires can blow us off course so easily, we are certainly adrift.
BINGO...sadly.
“Biden says he is pro-life but will not seek to impose his views on others.”
He seems to be confused. The sin is that he is pro abortion, not that he might imposed his views on others. If this is his way to justify taking communion, “well, I’m pro life but I promise not to impose my views on others”, then he is truly spiritually lost.
That is a seriously good observation.
