Many Unitarians would prefer that their polyamory activists keep quiet
Washington Post ^ | 3/22/2013 | Lisa Miller

The joke about Unitarians is that they’re where you go when you don’t know where to go. Theirs is the religion of last resort for the intermarried, the ambivalent, the folks who want a faith community without too many rules. It is perhaps no surprise that the Unitarian Universalist Association is one of the fastest-growing denominations in the country, ballooning 15 percent over the past decade, when other established churches were shrinking. Politically progressive to its core, it draws from the pool of people who might otherwise be “nones” – unaffiliated with any church at all.

But within the ranks of the UUA over the past few years, there has been some quiet unrest concerning a small but activist group that vociferously supports polyamory. That is to say “the practice of loving and relating intimately to more than one other person at a time,” according to a mission statement by Unitarian Universalists for Polyamory Awareness (UUPA). The UUPA “encourages spiritual wholeness regarding polyamory,” including the right of polyamorous people to have their unions blessed by a minister.

UUA headquarters says it has no official position on polyamory. “Official positions are established at general assembly and never has this issue been brought to general assembly,” a spokeswoman says.

But as the issue of same-sex marriage heads to the Supreme Court, many committed Unitarians think the denomination should have a position, which is that polyamory activists should just sit down and be quiet. For one thing, poly activists are seen as undermining the fight for same-sex marriage. The UUA has officially supported same-sex marriage, the spokeswoman says, “since 1979, with tons of resolutions from the general assembly.”

I have to wonder how polyamory affects divorce and alimony.

Ya know what you get when you cross a Unitarian with a Jehovah's Witness....

Someone who knocks on your door for no apparent reason.

Polygamy is accepted across the Islamic world (and some other places) and has a history going back thousands of years. Same-sex marriage is not NEARLY as widely accepted. For the Unitarians to say that same-sex marriage is deserving of acceptance, while polygamy is not, is disingenuous.

I only know one Unitarian and the thing I have noticed is she always says “think positive and good things will happen”. I am different, I say “hope for the best but prepare for the worst”. I consider myself a conservative realist and she is liberal living in la la land.

They ought to be worried. I saw an interview with a gal about a year ago. She said that as soon as the gays were allowed to marry, those who wanted group marriages (of whom she was one) would start demanding recognition. It’s what’s next on the leftist agenda...

IT might be a modern choice and judgment, but it’s not necessarily disingenuous.

I think it’s a very Modern worldview but it doesn’t have to be disingenuous. Please note I mean Modern like the school of thought not contemporary. I can see how it would mesh with UUA schools of thought.

A tenet of Unitarians: they believe in at most one God.

There are also Biblical patriarchs who had multiple wives.
It is interesting though that the rush to destroy monogomous marriage is promoting the sexual free-for-all and unstable personal lives that predated Christianity.
In the rush to tear down what they dislike, they create the chaos that Christianity once helped civilize.

The goal of sex positive agenda advocates is to smash monogamy. Some also profess a desire to smash the patriarchy.

Watch. After the predictable numbers of Republican panderers cave on homosexual marriage, they’ll cave on polyamory. Because young people support it. Then will come bestiality, pedophilia, and the rest. Marriage between a man and a chicken will be championed, and a number of Pubbie pols will cave on that... because young people are for it. And they don’t want to make anyone unhappy. Especially the chickens.

‘It is perhaps no surprise that the Unitarian Universalist Association is one of the fastest-growing denominations in the country, ballooning 15 percent over the past decade, when other established churches were shrinking.’

Except for the fact that there are not now, nor have there ever been more than a handful of members in the United States. Islam is much faster growing. When you have fewer than a half million members rapid growth and decline occur all the time.

In reality, three of the members of the West Borough Baptist Church had children so they are the fastest growing denomination at 30%. See, facts are easy to make up!

I really can't say honestly how any of those things are worse than homosexual "marriage." Seriously. It's not a slippery slope argument. Once you allow that homosexuals can be "married" you're already at the bottom of the slope...
