Every Catholic church has IHS and/or XP inscribed somewhere, usually in prominent locations in the church.
That’s the case today, and for the last couple of centuries, but way back ‘when’ folks had less money and there were far fewer ornaments ~ once Spain and the Hapsburg ‘empire’ became enormously wealthy with plenty of silver available to buy art, every noble and notable in their society got a personal portrait ~ or sometimes heroic painting done!
