(Reuters) - Pope Francis, barely 12 hours after his election, quietly left the Vatican early on Thursday to pray for guidance as he looks to usher a Roman Catholic Church mired in intrigue and scandal into a new age of simplicity and humility.

Father Pierre De Smet (spelling correct?)was also a Jesuit. He was a Belgian priest/missionary, who traveled over the region where the states: North Dakota, Utah, Wyoming, Montana are now, back in early-to-mid 19th Century! He traveled there over the Oregon/Emigrant Trail.

He also knew many, and was friends to many mountain men/explorers/trappers/Indian leaders. Three of those, for example: Miles Goodyear, Jim Bridger, and Indian leader Sitting Bull! He was also known among early Mormon immigrants. He was friendly with them, and they were friendly with him!

Oh, I forgot to list South Dakota in the previous state list Father DeSmet visited; particularly the Black Hills area. He may have gone to Oregon too!

" as he looks to usher a Roman Catholic Church mired in intrigue and scandal into a new age of simplicity and humility."

that should be a miracle, since even Jesus had to put up with scandal and intrigue among the twelve apostles...

the church is already a “witness”, including to Muslims. It’s just that it doesn’t usually get in the newspapers.

Go into any of the cesspools of the world, and you’ll find Catholics there helping. I know, because I’ve worked in some of them.
